Aoi Todo, born September 23, 2000, discovered the world of jujutsu during grade school. His display of physical prowess by defeating a high school student caught the attention of sorcerer Yuki Tsukumo, curing his boredom. She trained him in jujutsu, including the New Shadow Style. The question she asked him—"what kind of girls do you like?"—became his signature phrase for assessing others.
Standing over 6'3" with a heavily muscular build and tan skin, Todo has small black eyes and shoulder-length black hair usually tied in a top-knot bun, featuring distinctive flyaway strands resembling flower stamens. A prominent scar on the left side of his face resulted from harsh training with Tsukumo. He typically wears modified jujutsu high attire, removing his jacket and ripping his undershirt during battles, paired with loose martial arts pants, slippers, and a bright blue waist sash. Following the Shibuya Incident, he severed his left hand to prevent full transfiguration by Mahito, later replacing it with a vibraslap prosthesis.
Todo possesses an eccentric, battle-crazed personality, frequently posing to display his physique and reveling in combat. He vocally idolizes pop star Takada-chan, attending her events and visualizing conversations with her during introspection. His intolerance for boredom drives him to evaluate others through their taste in women; unsatisfactory answers provoke aggression, as seen when he assaulted Megumi Fushiguro for a "boring" response. Conversely, Yuji Itadori's matching preference triggered an immediate imaginary friendship narrative, leading Todo to declare Yuji his "best friend" despite no prior relationship. Underlying this eccentricity is strategic intelligence and philosophical depth, particularly concerning cursed energy manipulation and the unity of mind, body, and soul—principles he taught Yuji to unlock Black Flash in combat.
As a grade 1 sorcerer from a non-sorcerer family, Todo wields immense physical strength rivaling Yuji's, speed enabling him to blitz opponents, and mastery of brutal hand-to-hand combat incorporating strikes, stomps, and suplexes. His innate technique, Boogie Woogie, swaps positions between any targets with cursed energy—including objects, corpses, and living beings—activated by clapping. This technique demands acute spatial awareness and enables high-level tactical coordination, notably with Yuji against Hanami and Mahito. Losing his left hand in Shibuya initially hindered activation, forcing him to adapt by slapping Mahito's hand. The vibraslap prosthesis later restored Boogie Woogie with enhanced capabilities: executing 50 swaps per second, selective targeting, and domain countermeasures during the final Sukuna battle.
Historically, Todo single-handedly defeated five grade 1 curses without his technique and one special grade with it during Geto's December 24, 2017, attacks. He rejected Principal Gakuganji's order to assassinate Yuji during the Kyoto Goodwill Event, threatening his peers instead. His mentorship of Yuji during the event refined Yuji's cursed energy control and culminated in their near-defeat of Hanami through coordinated Black Flash assaults. In the Shibuya Incident, Todo prioritized ally rescue over retrieving Satoru Gojo, locating Yuji during Mahito's assault. He delivered a critical speech urging Yuji to persevere despite losses, emphasizing that jujutsu sorcerers honor the dead by continuing their fight—a core philosophy he lives by. During the Mahito battle, he sacrificed his hand to enable Yuji's victory and later returned in the Shinjuku Showdown with enhanced Boogie Woogie, facilitating Sukuna's defeat.
Todo maintains complex relationships: viewing Yuji as a brother and dedicating himself to his growth; intimidating Kyoto peers like Mai Zenin while pushing them toward strength; defying authority figures like Gakuganji when commands conflict with his values; and respecting opponents like Hanami for their power while acknowledging curses as threats to humanity. Though disliked by most students for his intensity, his strategic loyalty and unconventional methods cement his indispensable role in pivotal battles.
