Description
Nobue Itoh is the eldest main character in the anime Strawberry Marshmallow, a slice-of-life comedy focused on the daily lives of a group of girls. In the anime adaptation, she is a twenty-year-old junior college student, while in the original manga she is a sixteen-year-old high school freshman. This age discrepancy exists because the anime adjusted her age to legally accommodate her habits of smoking and drinking alcohol. She is the older sister of Chika Itoh, one of the younger central characters.

Nobue is generally mature, kind-hearted, and often serves as the adult authority figure within the group. She typically has the final say in the girls' activities and decisions. However, she has a notably irritable streak, which flares up most frequently in response to the chaotic antics of Miu Matsuoka, Chika's mischievous friend. Her patience wears thin quickly, especially when Miu crosses boundaries or creates trouble. Under the influence of alcohol, particularly beer, Nobue’s demeanor shifts dramatically: she becomes childish, reckless, and prone to the same sort of silly behavior she usually tries to manage in the younger girls.

Her primary motivations revolve around obtaining money for cigarettes, as she has a persistent nicotine addiction. She frequently attempts to borrow money from Chika, often framing it as a loan she never intends to repay. Nobue also regularly searches for part-time jobs to fund her smoking habit, though her efforts are often half-hearted or end in comedic failure. Beyond her vices, she possesses an appreciation for the cuteness of the younger girls, and she takes particular pleasure in watching them engage in endearing activities. This interest sometimes gives her a smug or amused expression, and she openly favors Matsuri Sakuragi and Ana Coppola, finding their personalities more agreeable than those of Chika and Miu.

Nobue’s role in the story is that of the older sister figure and de facto guardian. She anchors the group, providing a semblance of adult supervision even as she frequently indulges her own immature tendencies. Her key relationships include her bond with her sister Chika, which is built on a mix of genuine affection and casual exploitation. She is noticeably softer and more protective toward Matsuri and Ana, often giving them special treatment. By contrast, she openly antagonizes Miu, and the two share a bickering dynamic that provides much of the series’ humor.

In terms of development, Nobue remains largely static; she does not undergo a dramatic character arc. Her core traits stay consistent throughout the series, reinforcing her role as the unchanging older sister who both enables and exasperates the younger girls. Her notable abilities are not supernatural or combat-oriented. Instead, she demonstrates cleverness and a knack for mild manipulation, using her authority to get what she wants or to tease others. She also shows a limited capacity for responsibility when the situation genuinely calls for it, though she resists such moments. Her smoking and drinking are the most prominent markers of her adult status, yet they also serve as comedic limitations, highlighting her lack of maturity in other areas.
