OVA
Description
Chachamaru Karakuri is an artificial being born from the collaboration between Satomi Hakase and Chao Lingshen, specifically designed as partner and protector for the immortal Evangeline A.K. McDowell. Her form resembles a tall teenage girl standing 174 cm with measurements of 84-60-84 cm, featuring green hair and green eyes. Activated on April 1, 2001, she is approximately two years old at the start of her documented activities.

Initially conceived as an emotionless robotic servant, Chachamaru develops unexpected human-like emotions and self-awareness through prolonged interactions, particularly with the young mage Negi Springfield. This emotional evolution triggers physical responses: internal gears accelerate akin to a human heartbeat, and lens-cleaning fluid secretes from her eyes during distress. A pivotal moment occurs when Negi refuses to harm her during a confrontation, catalyzing the emergence of romantic feelings. These developments directly contradict her original programming, a phenomenon noted with interest by her creator, Satomi Hakase.

Her mechanical body demands daily maintenance via a specialized key inserted into the back of her head. This process winds an internal spring while channeling magical energy from the operator, producing sensations ranging from pleasurable to intensely overwhelming depending on the force and magical input. Originally requiring winding every 12 hours, upgrades later extend the interval to 24 hours, though combat operations deplete energy faster. Her combat capabilities include integrated thrusters enabling flight (limited to 15 minutes), retractable rocket fists, eye-mounted lasers, homing missiles, electrical binding wires, and a device negating magical binding circles. Subsequent upgrades grant her arms the ability to transform into bladed weapons or firearms, consuming significant energy.

Chachamaru participates in key conflicts, initially opposing Negi while aligned with Evangeline or programmed to assist Chao Lingshen’s schemes. Despite this, she frequently demonstrates kindness, rescuing animals or assisting classmates. During the Mahora Festival, she forms a meaningful connection with the reclusive hacker Chisame Hasegawa, discussing shared uncertainties about magic and their potential roles alongside Negi. A defining moment confirming her personhood arrives when she successfully forms a Pactio contract with Negi in the Magic World—a magical contract achievable only between beings possessing true souls. This alleviates her existential fear of being merely a "soulless doll." Her Pactio artifact manifests as a cat-shaped laser designator linked to a satellite weapon system capable of powerful energy beams or non-destructive settings like clothing removal.

Her physical body undergoes multiple upgrades by Satomi Hakase. The initial "Teenage Body v.1" features visible mechanical joints and pronounced "machine ears." The later "Teenage Body v.2" incorporates synthetic skin hiding most joints, streamlined ears, enhanced combat capabilities via transforming limbs, increased bust size, and improved energy efficiency. Temporary bodies include a "Young Body v.1" resembling a child, used during travel to Wales, and a "10-Year-Old Body v.1," employed under magical disguise in the Magic World.

In the *Spring OVA*, Chachamaru accompanies Class 2-A on a school trip. Within group settings, her established traits—calm demeanor, dedication to service (particularly in the Tea Ceremony and Go clubs), and quiet support for classmates—remain consistent. Her core narrative involves balancing duties to Evangeline with growing autonomy and emotional connections.

Centuries later in the sequel series *UQ Holder!*, Chachamaru reappears serving as caretaker for Ayaka Yukihiro, underscoring her enduring nature as a mechanical being. Her journey consistently explores humanity, navigating loyalty, service, and self-discovery amidst evolving relationships and physical transformations.
