Description
Yumi Fukuzawa enters Lillian Girls’ Academy as a timid, self-doubting first-year student, her days marked by nervous hesitation. A chance meeting at the Virgin Mary statue with Sachiko Ogasawara—who fixes Yumi’s scarf with poised elegance—leaves her flustered yet intrigued. Tsutako Takeshima’s photograph of the encounter forces Yumi to seek Sachiko’s approval for its display, sparking an uneasy rapport.

When Sachiko impulsively offers Yumi the role of her *petite sœur*, Yumi recoils, convinced the choice is arbitrary and insincere. Her admiration for Sachiko wars with her insecurity, a conflict that intensifies during a school play rehearsal. After Sachiko flees her fiancé Suguru’s overbearing advances, Yumi finds her in a greenhouse, listening as Sachiko reveals her distress over an arranged marriage. Though Yumi feels inadequate to help, the shared moment bridges their emotional distance. Post-play, Sachiko renews her rosary offer, and Yumi accepts, embracing the *sœur* bond.

Yumi’s sensitivity surfaces in tearful confrontations, like accusing Sachiko of neglect during Valentine’s preparations, fearing her chocolates were unwanted. Determined to prove her worth, she joins a treasure hunt to earn a date with Sachiko, signaling her gradual shift from fragility to resolve. As she ascends to the Yamayuri Council, she mentors juniors, her confidence blooming.

Touko Matsudaira, Sachiko’s cousin, tests Yumi’s growth. Jealousy flares at their closeness, but Touko’s rejection of Yumi’s *petite sœur* proposal—rooted in pride and fear of pity—spurs Yumi to uncover Touko’s orphaned past. Through patient empathy, Yumi dismantles Touko’s defenses, ultimately becoming her *grande sœur*, a testament to her evolving leadership.

Other relationships refine her journey: Sei Satō’s teasing stirs Sachiko’s jealousy; Yoshino Shimazu leans on Yumi’s steadiness; handling Sei’s graduation and Shimako’s challenges showcases her maturity. At Sachiko’s summer home, Yumi withstands peers’ mockery by performing "Maria-sama no Kokoro" with Sachiko, their duet silencing critics and strengthening their bond.

In later years, Yumi confronts the weight of tradition, choosing her own *petite sœur* while navigating Sachiko’s familial expectations and grief over her grandmother’s death. Through these trials, Yumi sheds her hesitant persona, emerging as a pillar of emotional and administrative strength within Lillian’s hallowed halls.
