Description
Mamoru Akasaka is a detective in the Public Security Bureau of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department and serves as the protagonist of the Himatsubushi-hen (Killing Time) arc of the story, set in 1978, one year before the main events of the series. Born on August 3, 1957, he is a young and elite police investigator who travels to the rural village of Hinamizawa to investigate the kidnapping of a government official’s son. During this investigation, he encounters a young Rika Furude, who behaves strangely and delivers a cryptic prophecy: she warns him to return to Tokyo immediately or he will face terrible regret. She also prevents him from calling his wife, saying it would only bring him sadness. Although Mamoru dismisses these words as a child’s odd behavior, the prophecy proves accurate, leading to the death of his beloved wife, Yukie Akasaka, in a fall down a set of stairs. This tragedy haunts him across multiple timelines.
Mamoru is calm, collected, and deeply principled, with a strong sense of justice and a hot-blooded dislike of crookedness. Before his marriage, he was a passionate and highly skilled mahjong player, known by the nickname “Baba no Mamoru” and feared in the Kabukicho district for his high-stakes play. He quit mahjong after repeated warnings from his girlfriend Yukie, whom he later married and loved dearly. Her death in many timelines becomes a profound psychological shock that drives his motivation.
His primary motivation is to prevent the deaths of his wife and Rika, whom he grows to care for after she tries to help him. In the Himatsubushi-hen timeline, he fails to save either. In the Minagoroshi-hen (Massacre) arc, he heeds Rika’s warning and returns to Tokyo early, saving his wife, but when he visits Hinamizawa again in 1983, he only takes a hot spring trip with his wife and leaves, ignoring Rika’s pleas for help, resulting in her death. This leads to the fan nickname “Hot Spring” for his perceived uselessness. However, in the final answer arc, Matsuribayashi-hen, Mamoru takes a different path: after hearing Rika’s prophecy, he calls his wife to warn her about the stairs, thereby preventing the accident while staying in Hinamizawa. He then dedicates himself to physical training, joining a special police unit and honing his combat skills every day with the sole goal of rescuing Rika when the crisis comes.
Mamoru’s key relationships include his wife Yukie, whose safety is his deepest concern; his friend Detective Kuraudo Ooishi, who collaborates with him during the investigation; his daughter Miyuki, who is born in timelines where Yukie survives; and Rika Furude, the young girl whose prophecies and repeated deaths across fragments ultimately inspire him to become her protector. His bond with Rika is built on mutual gratitude: Rika’s warning allows him to save his wife, and in return he determines to save Rika from her destined murder.
Over the course of the story, Mamoru develops from a relatively inexperienced policeman who struggles against the elite Yamainu squad into an overwhelmingly powerful fighter. His combat style is based on karate but adapted into a free, practical form with devastating destructive power; he is capable of distorting a car’s frame with his bare hands and smashing through windows with sheer impact. He single-handedly defeats a group of Yamainu soldiers to rescue Rika in the climactic scene of Matsuribayashi-hen. His growth is marked by overcoming regret and self-doubt, culminating in a heroic entrance that changes Rika’s fate and allows her to finally break free from the cycle of tragedy.
Notable abilities include his exceptional martial arts prowess, strategic thinking, and an unwavering will that he hones through continual training across multiple fragments. His physical strength is superhuman, and his fighting technique is both brutal and effective. Despite his serious demeanor, he also shows a tendency toward recklessness and aggression in combat, which leaves even experienced officers like Ooishi stunned. Mamoru Akasaka ultimately stands as the last fragment of possibility that shatters fate, embodying the theme that one person’s determination can alter the course of destiny when combined with the efforts of others.
