Description
Marika Kato is the daughter of Ririka Kato, famed among pirates as "Blaster Ririka," and the late Gonzaemon Kato, a space pirate captain. Her great-grandfather, Bunzaemon Kato, was the first captain of the pirate ship Bentenmaru, operating under a Letter of Marque from the Sea of the Morning Star government. This unique document legalizes piracy under specific terms and passes only to direct descendants, making Marika the Bentenmaru's fourth captain after her father's death. Residing on the planet Sea of the Morning Star in the Tau Ceti system, she attends Hakuoh Academy as a third-year high school student in the Snow Class. Before inheriting the captaincy, Marika felt earthbound and harbored a deep yearning to explore space.

She meticulously balances her student life, membership in the Hakuoh Academy Space Yacht Club, and part-time waitressing at the retro Lamp House café with her demanding duties as captain of the Bentenmaru. Though inheriting the role out of necessity, Marika swiftly demonstrated her capability through decisive leadership and adaptability. Her crew, including veterans from her father's era like medic and unofficial first mate Misa Grandwood, helmsman Kane McDougal, and tactical officer Schnitzer, initially viewed her skeptically but soon recognized her skills.

Marika possesses long pink-orange hair and light blue eyes. As captain, her standard uniform features a black coat with gold highlights, white cuffs, frills, shoulder guards, a bicorne hat bearing a pirate emblem, a red checkered skirt, black boots, and a red belt holding her sword. For the events of the Abyss of Hyperspace movie, she wears a specialized red variant of this uniform, adding a black cape, a green strap across her right shoulder, and a brown belt. Her everyday attire includes the Hakuoh Academy uniform—a blazer with white collared shirt, red ribbon, and thigh-length skirt—or a maid outfit while working at the café. Her friend Mami Endo frequently redesigns elements of her pirate uniform, adding accessories or creating new versions for specific missions.

Her personality blends cheerful optimism and approachability with underlying cunning intelligence and strategic thinking. She sometimes appears naïve or clumsy but reveals sharp problem-solving abilities, often devising unconventional solutions in crises. As captain, she prioritizes crew and ship safety yet willingly takes calculated risks for long-term gain. Her leadership involves quick decisions, maintaining calm under pressure, and leveraging resources effectively. She pushes herself relentlessly, frequently leading to exhaustion and oversleeping.

Key relationships define her life. She shares a relaxed, trusting bond with her mother Ririka, whom she intensely admires and addresses casually as "Ririka-san." Ririka supports Marika's choices but occasionally withholds family secrets, like details about Marika's father or the Kato family's pot-au-feu recipe. Mami Endo, her closest friend since middle school, offers emotional support and designs her pirate uniforms. Chiaki Kurihara, heir to the pirate ship Barbaroosa, initially observes her coldly but develops a deep, albeit reluctantly admitted, fondness, serving as a mentor in piracy. Princess Gruier Serenity and her sister Grunhilde transition from adversaries to loyal allies, with Gruier often assisting despite concerns about Marika disregarding royal protocols. Marika also maintains strong ties with supportive Hakuoh Academy Yacht Club members.

Her diverse skills include licensed shuttle piloting with exceptional spacecraft handling, capable of complex maneuvers like dodging machine-gun fire during the Nebula Cup. Her training encompasses swordplay, firearms, hand-to-hand combat, spacewalking, electronic warfare, and navigation. She is proficient in operating both the Bentenmaru's systems and the Odette II yacht. Beyond piracy, she excels at waitressing, making parfaits at the Lamp House, and cooking her family's pot-au-feu after uncovering its secret recipe. Her tactical acumen involves anticipating enemy actions, planning countermeasures, and improvising with available tools.

Her journey across media shows evolution from an inexperienced successor to a respected captain. In the Abyss of Hyperspace movie, she assists Kanata Mugen, son of a famous space explorer, in locating his father's legacy, navigating challenges that test her problem-solving and leadership while wearing the specialized red uniform. Her growth is marked by increasing command confidence, deeper bonds with allies like Gruier and Chiaki, and the continuous balancing act between her ordinary student life and extraordinary pirate responsibilities.
