Description
Evangeline Athanasia Katherine McDowell, commonly called Evangeline A.K. McDowell, is a vampire over 600 years of age who retains the physical form of a ten-year-old child. Born during the Hundred Years' War, likely in Scotland, she was raised as a nobleman's ward in a castle. On her tenth birthday, she was transformed into a Shinso vampire through a magical ritual performed by the Mage of the Beginning. Waking to find she had fed on someone in the castle, she fled to escape notice. Originally bearing typical vampire weaknesses, she cultivated potent magical abilities to pursue vengeance against her creator, whom she ultimately killed. Her immortal condition compelled a life of wandering, and she once survived being burned at the stake after overstaying in a single location.
She later met Nagi Springfield, the Thousand Master, who rescued her only to refuse her ambitions. Pursuing him to Japan, she was deceived into consuming an anti-vampire soup containing garlic and leeks, enabling Nagi to bind her to Mahora Academy using the Infernus Scholasticus curse. This spell suppressed her powers and confined her to the campus, with a promise of freedom upon graduation. Nagi’s subsequent disappearance left her imprisoned until the arrival of his son, Negi Springfield. During her confinement, she worked as a security guard for the school dean, Konoemon Konoe.
Evangeline exhibits a cold and devilish manner, frequently speaks with a British accent, and makes remarks with an evil bent. She despises garlic and class participation but takes pleasure in tea prepared by her companion Chachamaru, Japanese landscapes, and the game of Go, joining both the Go Club and Tea Ceremony Club at Mahora. She reacts with anger to being called “little” or “shorty” and maintains a detached stance toward most classmates, favoring the company of Chachamaru and another partner, Chachazero. Beneath her harsh exterior lies a rarely revealed gentler aspect. Her magical expertise encompasses ice magic, manipulation of human will, and control over dolls, with powers magnified during full moons, permitting a temporary return to her original adult form. She frequently wears Gothic-style attire.
Her dynamic with Negi Springfield shifted from early hostility, fueled by her grudge against Nagi, to her role as his mentor in magical combat. In exchange for training, she required menial service and regular blood payments, though how his blood would help break her curse was never fully explained. She aided Negi in critical conflicts, such as saving him on the Kyoto trip by bending the rules of her confinement, and offered advanced instruction at her magically concealed resort. Under her guidance, Negi mastered techniques like Magia Erebea and numerous lightning spells. She also occasionally showed flashes of romantic interest in him, including a sensual kiss.
In extended media, such as the spin-off *UQ Holder!*, she is known as Yukihime and engages with new characters like Touta Konoe, participating in events such as onsen baths and combat. Her history includes prior connections to Nagi Springfield’s Ala Rubra comrades, including Albireo Imma and Jack Rakan. In the original series’ epilogue, she is described as having married Nagi Springfield.
She stands 130 cm tall, weighs 59.3 kg, and has body measurements of B67-W48-H63. She possesses blonde hair, blue eyes, and Caucasian features, making her the only Caucasian in her class and the oldest student despite her childlike appearance.
