TV-Series
Description
Asuta Soro is a supporting character in the story and a student at Kashima High School, where he is a classmate of the protagonist, Hazumu Osaragi, in their second year. He is established early on as Hazumu’s best and closest male friend, having known him for a significant amount of time. In terms of personality and demeanor, Asuta is presented as being considerably more traditionally masculine than Hazumu, who had a gentle and effeminate nature even before a fateful incident changed his life.
Asuta’s motivations are rooted in his role as a supportive, if sometimes misguided, friend. At the beginning of the narrative, he is one of the friends who pressures Hazumu to confess his romantic feelings to their classmate Yasuna Kamiizumi. Thinking from a pragmatic, guy-oriented perspective, Asuta had even formulated a plan for the aftermath of the confession. Regardless of the outcome, he intended to take Hazumu out into town to have fun and distract him from the potential pain of rejection, showing a desire to protect his friend from emotional distress in his own way. This plan is further illustrated by an attempt to give Hazumu adult magazines as a means of consolation on the night Hazumu was involved in an accident on Mount Kashima.
Asuta’s role in the story becomes far more complicated following the accident, when an alien named Hitoshi Sora inadvertently revives Hazumu as a biological female. While Asuta had been a solid, unchanging presence in Hazumu’s life as a boy, the physical transformation causes a profound and troubling internal shift for him. He suddenly finds his former best friend to be very attractive and cannot suppress sexual thoughts and fantasies about Hazumu in her new female form. This creates a central conflict for his character as he struggles to reconcile his old platonic feelings with his new, unwanted romantic and physical attractions. He continuously tries to remind himself that the person inside has not changed, and that as her best friend, he should not be thinking of her in such a way, often berating himself for having what he considers impure thoughts. Throughout much of the series, Hazumu remains completely oblivious to Asuta’s inner turmoil and his growing attraction to her.
Asuta’s key relationships are primarily defined by his connection to Hazumu and his interactions with the other main characters. He is also a member of the same social circle, which includes Hazumu’s childhood friend Tomari Kurusu. Tomari is often nearby when Asuta’s thoughts or actions betray his attraction to Hazumu, and she does not hesitate to administer swift, physical discipline, such as a kick to the head, to correct his behavior. Asuta’s dynamic with Hazumu changes over time; he eventually realizes that they are gradually growing apart or are not as close as they were when Hazumu was a boy. He does find it excellent that his friend has become a very attractive girl, but ultimately resolves to accept his role as simply her best male friend, recognizing that Hazumu’s primary romantic interest lies elsewhere, particularly with Yasuna.
In terms of development, Asuta’s arc is one of internal struggle and eventual acceptance. He journeys from a supportive male friend, to a confused young man wrestling with desire for that same friend after a drastic change, and finally to a person who makes a conscious decision to prioritize the friendship over his own romantic feelings. He constantly beats himself up for his thoughts but learns to manage and suppress them. A notable conclusion to his personal story occurs in the final pages of the original manga, where Asuta announces to the others that he has found a girlfriend. When he shows them a photograph of her, his friends remark that she bears a strong resemblance to Hazumu, indicating the lasting impact of his feelings.
As a student, Asuta wears the standard school uniform, which includes a tie, and he has distinct visual traits such as spiky hair. His hair color is officially listed as gray, though it is sometimes interpreted as black, and his eyes are blue. His primary notable ability is not a physical or supernatural power, but rather a specific form of emotional resilience and commitment to his principles. Despite his powerful and persistent attractions, he possesses the strength of will to constantly police his own thoughts, suppress his desires, and dedicate himself to maintaining a platonic friendship with Hazumu above all else.
