Description
Hunter Steele is the central protagonist of the anime Spider Riders: Yomigaeru Taiyou. He is a young boy from the surface world, often referred to as an Earthen, who becomes stranded in the subterranean realm of Arachna. His journey begins as he follows the clues left in the journal of his grandfather, Digger Steele, leading him to a jungle pyramid where a mysterious portal pulls him into the Inner World.
Physically, Hunter is recognizable by his bright red hair and green eyes, which he typically keeps tied back with a distinctive white headband adorned with four green gems. His everyday clothing consists of a bluish-white t-shirt under an open red vest, paired with dark blue jean shorts, white socks, and brown shoes. When he activates his Spider Rider armor, he dons a blue battle tunic featuring a red orb, along with blue shoulder guards, white gloves, blue pants, and white boots.
Hunter's personality is a mix of contrasting traits that evolve significantly over the course of his adventures. Initially, he is portrayed as impulsive, stubborn, and somewhat lazy, often complaining about difficult situations despite displaying a core of determination and bravery. He can be clueless and ignorant at times, which frequently causes friction, particularly with his battle spider partner. However, his defining characteristic is his unwavering motto, Never Give Up, which drives him to persevere through overwhelming odds. As the story progresses, he matures into a more thoughtful and tactical individual, developing a strong sense of justice and a deep-seated desire to protect the people of Arachna.
His primary motivation shifts from simply trying to find a way back to the surface to actively safeguarding his new home. He becomes driven to understand the complexities of the conflict between the humans of Arachna and the insectoid Invectids, eventually striving not just for victory in battle but for a lasting peace between the two races.
The most pivotal relationship in Hunter's life is with his battle spider, Shadow. Their partnership is reluctant and fraught with conflict from the start, largely due to Shadow's immense pride and preference for working alone, clashing with Hunter's inexperience and brash nature. Over time, their constant arguments give way to mutual respect, trust, and a deep, unbreakable bond that becomes the foundation of their strength as a Spider Rider team.
Another critical relationship is with Corona, a fellow Spider Rider who is the first human Hunter meets in Arachna. He develops a clear but unspoken romantic affection for her, admiring her good spirit and unwavering resolve. His shyness prevents him from openly sharing these feelings, but her image serves as a source of calm and focus for him during intense battles. He also receives mentorship from the experienced warrior Igneous and forms strong alliances with other Riders like Magma, broadening his understanding of teamwork and responsibility. The legacy of his grandfather, Digger Steele, a Spider Rider himself who knew the legendary hero Quake, serves as a constant source of inspiration and a link to the history of Arachna.
In the story, Hunter plays the role of the prophesied outsider, an Earthen who is destined to bring either salvation or destruction to the Inner World. He undertakes critical missions to protect the Oracle Keys, powerful artifacts that are fragments of the Spirit Oracle's power, from falling into the hands of the Invectid leader, Mantid. His journey culminates in a final confrontation where he learns that Mantid is himself a vengeful Earthen who plunged the Invectids into a century of darkness. In this moment, Hunter is forced to choose between vengeance and mercy; he ultimately chooses the latter, offering Mantid redemption and restoring peace.
As a human, Hunter possesses no innate supernatural powers and relies on his combat training and his weapon, the Axial Pike. His true abilities emerge from his bond with Shadow and his use of the Oracle Keys. When he wields the power of an Oracle Key, his armor transforms. With one key, his left shoulder pad enlarges, granting him the ability to shoot webs with an attack called Electra Twist. With two keys, his right shoulder pad also transforms, providing a larger shield, a long sword, and two non-flying wings, allowing him to use the Blue Bolt attack. When he harnesses the power of three or four keys, his wings retract and are replaced by four metal spider legs, and he unleashes his most powerful special attack, the Blue Wave.
