Ryuuren Ran, youngest of the Ran clan’s five brothers, is celebrated as a prodigy both within his family and the wider world. At four years old, he earned the name “Ryuuren,” a title reserved for those chosen to host one of the Eight Coloured Sages—in his case, the Blue Immortal. This role grants him the Immortal’s omniscient awareness of past, present, and future, though Ryuuren’s consciousness remains distinct from the Blue Immortal’s detached, serene persona when it assumes control.
Notorious for his flamboyant style, he drapes himself in eccentric accessories: vegetables, feathers, and a peacock-adorned headpiece. His unpredictability fuels impulsive acts, like bartering ingredients for chicken stew through chaotic trades until left with a straw, or embarking on spontaneous ghost hunts sparked by rumors. He wields a yokobue flute, producing deliberately jarring melodies to unsettle others, yet masters conventional instruments with ease.
Academically brilliant, he secured second place in the Imperial Exams but abandoned the ceremony to roam the countryside. His exam essay famously rejected serving the emperor, underscoring his disdain for politics. Despite this, he later aids in delivering a governor’s seal during a crisis, driven by loyalty to his self-proclaimed “soul friends”—Kou Shuurei (“Soul Friend #1”), who endures his antics, and To Eigetsu (“Soul Friend #2”), whose alter-ego Yogetsu he humorously dubs “Soul Friend #2.5.”
Familial ties remain tenuous: he dismissively addresses his fourth brother, Ran Shuuei, as “foolish elder brother #4,” and shares a contentious relationship with half-sister Ran Jyuusan, who once likened him to horse dung. Yet the Ran clan deems him irreplaceable, even proposing him as a political match for Shuurei due to his strategic worth.
As the Blue Immortal’s vessel, Ryuuren glimpses prophecies and perceives events across Saiunkoku without physical presence. Bound to observe rather than act, he nonetheless defies this passivity to shield allies like Eigetsu. His intellect is matched by martial prowess—evidenced when he once dislodged a door with bare hands—and latent physical strength.
The Blue Immortal’s presence emerges during pivotal moments: guiding travelers to the Hyou Clan’s domain or engaging other Immortals. This duality—Ryuuren’s whimsical humanity clashing with the Immortal’s austere authority—cements his role as both a capricious wanderer and a linchpin in celestial struggles.
