Gemini Saga, also known as Pope Ares during his impersonation, serves as the Gold Saint of Gemini. Born with an inherent duality, he harbors both benevolent and malevolent personalities due to merging with the evil spirit Lemure at birth. This duality manifests physically through shifting hair colors—blond for virtue and black for corruption, though anime adaptations depict blue and gray. Initially celebrated across Greece for kindness and wisdom, he was a prime Papal candidate until Pope Shion sensed the latent evil and chose Sagittarius Aiolos instead. This rejection triggered the malevolent persona's dominance, leading to Shion's murder at Star Hill and the theft of his identity. For thirteen years, Saga ruled Sanctuary disguised as Pope while suppressing his benevolent counterpart. As the false Pope, Saga orchestrated multiple assassination attempts on the infant Athena, thwarted by Aiolos who rescued her and escaped with the Sagittarius Cloth. He later dispatched Silver Saints and manipulated Gold Saints like Leo Aiolia to eliminate the Bronze Saints and consolidate power. During the Sanctuary arc, Saga confronted Pegasus Seiya at Athena's temple. His benevolent persona briefly resurfaced, enabling Seiya to heal Athena with her shield. Overwhelmed by remorse for his evil persona's atrocities, Saga committed suicide via self-inflicted Galaxian Explosion as penance. Resurrected in the Hades arc under Hades's control, Saga invaded Sanctuary alongside Aquarius Camus and Capricorn Shura. They feigned allegiance while secretly plotting to aid Athena, culminating in using the forbidden Athena Exclamation to eliminate Virgo Shaka—a strategic sacrifice to reveal Athena's divine armor location. After declaring their true loyalty, the trio dissipated their life force to relay this information. Saga wields immense power, employing techniques like Genro Maöken for mind control, Another Dimension for spatial banishment, and the galaxy-destroying Galaxian Explosion. His Seventh Sense mastery enables light-speed movement and endurance in prolonged battles. Posthumously in Soul of Gold, he revived as an Einherjar in Asgard, obtaining an Odin-enhanced God Cloth. There, he joined fellow Gold Saints to defeat Loki, leveraging an amplified multi-galactic Galaxian Explosion before returning to the afterlife. Spin-offs expand his legacy: Episode G depicts Cronos influencing his evil persona during Titan conflicts; Dark Wing introduces Sōjirō Tokito as his successor Gemini Saint, trained by Aiolos; Next Dimension confirms Saga as his era's most powerful Gold Saint through Ikki's acknowledgment during a battle against the 18th-century Gemini Cain.
