Description
Yui Hongo, a middle school student initially portrayed as academically gifted and content, is Miaka Yuki's best friend since kindergarten. Transported with Miaka into the Universe of the Four Gods via a mysterious library book, Yui returns to the real world almost immediately while Miaka remains. Attempting to help Miaka, Yui reenters the book world and becomes trapped. Attacked by bandits and rendered unconscious, she awakens believing she has been raped and attempts suicide. Rescued by Nakago, leader of the Seiryuu forces, he manipulates her into believing Miaka orchestrated her suffering, fueling Yui's resentment and jealousy over Miaka's relationship with Tamahome, a Suzaku Celestial Warrior. Yui allies with Nakago and becomes the Priestess of Seiryuu.
As Priestess, Yui summons Seiryuu and makes three wishes: the first seals Suzaku's powers, stripping the Suzaku warriors of their abilities; the second transports herself and Miaka back to the real world to separate Miaka from Tamahome, though Tamahome follows them; witnessing Nakago's true destructive ambitions and the resulting devastation across both worlds, Yui realizes her grave errors. Filled with regret, she uses her third wish to sacrifice herself to Seiryuu, lifting the seal on Suzaku so Miaka can save everyone. Miaka subsequently uses one of her own wishes to rescue Yui.
Reconciling with Miaka, Yui later enters a long-term relationship with Tetsuya Kajiwara, a friend of Miaka's brother Keisuke, and carries deep remorse for her past actions, seeking redemption. When the sealed demon god Tenkou is revived, Yui actively assists Miaka and Tamahome in confronting this new threat, determined to protect their worlds and atone. Roughly ten to twelve years later, Yui appears as a mature adult, maintaining her relationship with Tetsuya and remaining protective of Miaka. During events involving Mayo Sakaki, the new Priestess of Suzaku, Yui expresses concern over Mayo's manipulation and its impact on Miaka and her family.
Physically, Yui has blonde hair, blue eyes, and a height of 162 cm. She initially sports a short, practical haircut to deter unwanted attention, which later grows into a bob. Her personality evolves significantly: initially intelligent and mature but prone to seeing situations in black-and-white terms, her trauma and manipulation lead her down a path of bitterness and vengeance. Over time, she regains her compassionate nature, demonstrates fierce loyalty to those she cares about, and achieves significant emotional maturity, moving past her earlier jealousy and resentment.
