TV-Series
Description
Amanojaku is a powerful entity from Japanese folklore, a demon-like creature with an inherently contrary nature that provokes humans toward wicked deeds and opposes moral order. Long before the series' events, Satsuki and Keiichirou's mother sealed him within a mountain camphor tree to contain his malevolent influence. Urbanization later destroyed the tree, inadvertently freeing him.

Initially appearing as a small, crimson spirit with a wispy tail and high-pitched voice, Amanojaku gorges on human fear to fuel his physical evolution. After failing to befriend Satsuki, he manipulates objects to incite terror, growing larger and more muscular each time. His second form features longer hair, bandaged forearms, and a deeper voice. His final transformation renders him a hulking oni-like entity with dark green skin, red hair and beard, pointed ears, tribal tattoos, a tattered loincloth, and golden hoops.

Trapped within the family cat Kaya during an exorcism ritual, Amanojaku becomes bound to the protagonists. In this feline form—a black Bombay cat with heterochromatic eyes—his supernatural abilities are severely limited, though he retains ghost-sensing capabilities. He openly relishes the children's peril during ghost encounters and expresses contempt for humanity.

Throughout the series, his character evolves. Despite maintaining hostility, he gradually provides tactical information and aid against spirits like Yamime, Souma, and Lord Ouma. He forms a bond with Keiichirou, accompanying him to emotionally significant locations such as the hospital where the boy's mother died. When other ghosts mock his association with humans, he experiences internal conflict, defensively rationalizing that he preserves them as "prey."

His allegiance culminates in the finale. He voluntarily sacrifices his freedom to save the group, abandoning Kaya's body to combat Lord Ouma directly after promising Keiichirou to pick white daffodils—their mother's favorite flower. Post-battle, his fate remains ambiguous; he may roam freely or be resealed in a new camphor tree, implied by his laughter echoing near the tree and the appearance of daffodils at its base, symbolizing resolution of his grudge against Satsuki's family.
