TV Special
Description
Roronoa Zoro serves as the combatant and swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, widely recognized as the right-hand man to captain Monkey D. Luffy. Born in the East Blue, he descends from the Shimotsuki Family of Wano Country and the legendary samurai Shimotsuki Ryuma. Before joining the crew, he earned the epithet "Pirate Hunter" as a bounty hunter. His primary motivation stems from a childhood promise to his deceased friend Kuina, driving his relentless ambition to become the world's greatest swordsman.
Zoro employs his unique self-created Three Sword Style, wielding three katanas simultaneously—one in each hand and a third clenched in his mouth, though he adapts to using one or two swords as needed. During serious battles, he ties his signature black bandana around his head. His swords include the Wado Ichimonji, Sandai Kitetsu, and Shusui (which replaced Yubashiri after its destruction); after the timeskip, he wields Enma alongside Wado Ichimonji and Sandai Kitetsu. Possessing immense physical strength and endurance, he rarely succumbs to intoxication despite frequent sake consumption. A defining trait is his exceptionally poor sense of direction, often leading to comedic misadventures.
In combat, Zoro adheres to a strict code of honor, refusing to flee battles or employ underhanded tactics, and openly acknowledging weaknesses to opponents. While typically serious and stoic, he exhibits exaggerated reactions during conflicts with crewmates like Sanji. He prioritizes unwavering loyalty to Luffy and crew cohesion, notably demanding Usopp's formal apology during the Water 7 conflict as a condition for rejoining. His body bears multiple scars, including a distinctive diagonal chest wound from his defeat by Dracule Mihawk and ankle scars from an escape attempt on Little Garden; after the timeskip, he gains an additional scar over his left eye.
Within the "Episode of Merry" special, recounting the Going Merry's story through the Water 7 and Enies Lobby arcs, Zoro participates in key events. This includes the confrontation with CP9 to rescue Nico Robin and the internal conflict involving Usopp's departure. His combat role involves battles against CP9 agents, though sequences are condensed. The narrative highlights his unwavering stance on crew loyalty and hierarchy during the Usopp conflict. Visually, he appears in attire consistent with the Enies Lobby Arc: an unzipped yellow short-sleeved jacket with pocket flaps. The special reinforces his established characterization, particularly his resolve during critical crew decisions and battles.
Zoro's known bounties reflect his rising notoriety, escalating from 60,000,000 to 1,111,000,000 post-Wano, marking him as part of the "Worst Generation" coalition of high-bounty rookies. His abilities include proficiency in Armament and Observation Haki, alongside the rare Conqueror's Haki, which he later refines to coat his swords during combat.
