Description
Ginger is one of the three members of an alien girl gang that also includes her partners Sugar and Pepper. These three are aspiring delinquents from the same planetary school that Lum, Benten, and Oyuki once attended. Ginger is often referred to by the nickname Hotoke no Ginger, which translates to Ginger the Buddha. Her physical appearance typically includes short hair and what appear to be small horns growing from her head. In her original anime design, she had blonde hair and blue eyes, while the 2022 remake gave her teal hair with pink highlights and a fur-like outfit.

As a character, Ginger is defined by her ambition to build a fearsome reputation. She and her friends are determined to prove themselves as a legendary bad girl gang, but their primary obstacle is the outsized legend of Lum, Benten, and Oyuki, who are considered the most feared trio in their school's history. Their rivalry is largely based on a misunderstanding, as the older trio never actually claimed to be a gang, but their reputations grew far beyond reality through rumor. Ginger and her partners are characterized as immature, foolish, and far from reasonable. They are deathly afraid of facing Lum and company directly, so their schemes to prove superiority typically involve pranks, convoluted plots, and theft rather than honest confrontation. Despite their tough talk, they are prone to panic at the reality of facing their legendary seniors.

Ginger possesses a unique and somewhat odd alien ability. She can stall her bodily functions to convincingly fake her own death. This power allows her to play dead in the middle of a chase, though like the abilities of her friends, it is comparably useless against the overwhelming powers of their rivals. In practice, this ability is used to momentarily confuse her opponents during a chase sequence.

Her primary role in the story is as a comedic antagonist. She and her gang challenge Benten, Lum, and Oyuki to a duel in order to retrieve a stolen chain that serves as the key to Benten's house. The challenge is delivered via a VHS video message, showcasing their enthusiasm for theatrics. During the subsequent confrontation, Ginger works closely with Sugar and Pepper, passing the stolen chain between them in a game of keep-away. Her relationship with Ataru Moroboshi is minimal, though in one instance he becomes accidentally involved in the chase, and the group once attempted to seduce him away from Lum, a scheme that proved unsuccessful.

Ginger is a static character who does not undergo significant development. Her sole purpose is to serve as a recurring nuisance, embodying the gap between her grandiose self-image as a fearsome delinquent and her actual timid, ineffectual nature. Her tenacity is her most prominent trait, as she and her friends continually get back up and try new schemes despite their constant failures.
