Description
Ichî (also Ichi or Ichii) endured a difficult childhood marked by poverty alongside his older stepsister Sarasa. Displaying early delinquent tendencies and considered a "ladies' man," he harbored deep, unreciprocated feelings for Sarasa, feelings complicated by her engagement to a wealthy man and later marriage to Jeff, Zero's older brother, making her his stepsister-in-law. His life shifted dramatically upon partnering with Zero during the Magic Exams. Initially intending to exploit Zero financially, their bond solidified after combining magical powers to defeat a powerful foe, transforming them into inseparable best friends and catalyzing Ichî's evolution from delinquent to a consistently kind, patient, and polite individual prioritizing others' well-being.
His defining magical specialty is defensive or barrier magic. He enrolled with Zero in a Magical Cram School to prepare for the Magic Exams. Their plan to win by securing the Crystal Pearl was disrupted when human girl Nina Yamada accidentally swallowed it. Vowing to protect Nina for the six months needed to create a potion to extract the pearl, as she became a target for other examinees, he and Zero enrolled in her school and secretly resided in a magically expanded space within her closet to guard her constantly. During this period, he developed romantic feelings for Nina, creating a love triangle, though Nina ultimately chose Zero. Demonstrating unwavering loyalty, he nearly sacrificed his life protecting Nina from the villain Joker when Zero was powerless, explicitly warning Zero he would pursue Nina if Zero died.
Despite his typically gentle demeanor, Ichî possesses a capacity for intense anger, notably furious when Zero and Nina repeatedly lost Crystal Drop fragments due to romantic distractions during the Advanced Magic Exams, and reacting near-violently upon learning the head examiner canceled the exams based on a disturbing promise involving Sarasa made by Zero's grandmother. His sense of honor and loyalty prevents him from acting on lingering feelings for Nina after she chooses Zero, explicitly stating he could not be with her out of respect for Zero.
Two years later, during the Advanced Magic Exams, he and Zero again protected Nina after she swallowed the Crystal Drop. He played a key role helping Zero defy his grandmother's attempts to force him into an arranged marriage, aiding in securing the Stardust Stone to nullify the contract and later rescuing Nina when forced into a wedding with Al. Post-exams, he and Zero undertook further trials to become Magical Police Officers, returning to the human world.
His romantic storyline concludes with Rokka Wan, a five-year-old witch (often using transformation magic to appear older) who relentlessly pursued him since the initial exams. Ten years after the first series' events, realizing he did not want Rokka to marry Forte, he sought and gained her father's permission to marry her. By the sequel's epilogue, they are married with a daughter named Itsuki. Pearl, Nina's dragon familiar hatched from the Crystal Pearl, lives with him in the magical world during this time.
Born November 11, he is 15 during the first exam and 17 during the Advanced Exams. His blood type is O, and his magic exam number is 001. He is one of several characters named after numbers, with "Ichii" meaning "one," reflecting he was the second character created. He attracts significant admiration, evidenced by a school club dedicated to him and Zero. He also makes a background appearance in *Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch* due to the creator's involvement.
