Description
Born Marcus Venture, Jr. in 2179 Brooklyn, Mark Venture serves as Chief Navigator aboard the space battleship Argo. The death of his father, Commander Philip Venture, during humanity's first hostile encounter with the Gamilon Empire in 2191 fueled a deep hatred within him. This manifested in volatile reactions to suggestions humans started the conflict or gestures honoring fallen Gamilons. This resentment persisted until challenged by a Gamilon prisoner and revelations from Shou Yamazaki, a former subordinate of his father. Yamazaki disclosed Commander Venture fired the first shot under orders. Forced to confront this trauma, Venture processed his grief through reflection and conversations with crewmates like Admiral Avatar and Nova Forrester. He gradually released his bitterness, reconciled with friend Derek Wildstar, and ultimately supported peace efforts with the Gamilons.
Venture displays a calm, controlled, and reserved demeanor, acting as a natural counterbalance to Wildstar's impulsiveness. This dynamic sees Venture tempering Wildstar's rash decisions or, driven by loyalty, following him into unwise actions. As head of navigation, his piloting skills prove critical to the Argo's success, notably during humanity's first warp flight and key battles including Operation M-2, Carell 163, the Rainbow Star Cluster, and Shambleau. He briefs senior staff on celestial phenomena and Gamilon activities, providing vital navigational options during crises. His duties also encompass training junior navigators Christopher Eager and Buster Block.
Promoted to full lieutenant during the 2199 mission to Iscandar, Venture later found himself entangled in a mutiny led by Lieutenants Niimi and Itou. They appointed him interim captain to return the Argo to Earth. While publicly compliant, Venture secretly opposed the mutiny, refusing to abandon Wildstar's survey team on a planet even when Itou threatened him at gunpoint. The mutiny ended when Niimi intervened and Toru Hoshina disarmed Itou.
In 2202, serving in the Cosmo Navy transport fleet, Venture received a telepathic message resembling his deceased father, urging him to board the Argo for a mission to Telezart. Initially skeptical and contemplating military resignation, he monitored the crew from afar before disguising himself as security personnel. He infiltrated the ship just before departure, resuming his role as helmsman at Wildstar's request.
During the Bolar Wars (2205), Venture remained Chief Navigator under Captain Wildstar as the Argo sought a new homeworld after a solar catastrophe. Alongside Eager and Dash, he formed a disciplinary triad overseeing newer crew members. This group maintained shipboard order and shielded Wildstar from minor conflicts, including monitoring activities like illicit gambling – which Wildstar eventually joined. Venture's navigation expertise remained vital during conflicts involving the Galman Empire (reformed Gamilons) and Bolar Federation.
Identified by his uniform's green navigation insignia, Venture's character arc transitions from vengeance-driven animosity to measured leadership. His unwavering loyalty to the crew and mission objectives defines his service across all documented deployments.
