Description
Akira Yamamoto appears in multiple iterations of the Space Battleship Yamato franchise, with distinct portrayals across media. In the original continuity, specifically Star Blazers: The Comet Empire, he is a male fighter pilot serving on the Yamato. A member of the Black Tigers squadron, he later commands the second squadron of the Cosmo Tigers during the conflict against the White Comet Empire. His aircraft is stolen by the space marine Saito. He dies tragically during the final assault on the White Comet Empire's capital fortress Gatlantis when his fighter is shot down and crashes. This version shares a name with a World War II Imperial Japanese Navy pilot.

In the remake continuity starting with Space Battleship Yamato 2199, Akira Yamamoto is reimagined as a female fighter pilot born on Mars. Born in 2179 in Arcadia City, her eyes turned red due to Martian environmental conditions. Her family evacuated to Earth during the Second Inner Planetary War, but most perished in early Garmillas planet bombings, leaving only her and her older brother Akio. Akio, a recon pilot, was killed during the Second Battle of Mars in 2198, gifting her a red pendant before his death.

Initially an Ensign in the Yamato's accounting department, Yamamoto longed to join the fighter squadron. She proved exceptional piloting skills during the Enceladus resupply mission by stealing a Cosmo Zero to defend the ship against Garmillas androids, destroying multiple enemy tanks. This action secured her transfer to the fighter squadron under Lieutenant Susumu Kodai's recommendation. As Kodai's wingman, she flew critical operations including Operation M2 at Pluto, where she identified the real Garmillas base hidden behind an artificial aurora and located enemy beam weapon coordinates. Initially driven by vengeance for her brother, she gradually evolved beyond this mindset.

During the voyage, she formed an unexpected friendship with Garmillas officer Melda Ditz, escorting her under a flag of truce during a dimensional fault incident and defending her honor during negotiations. After the journey to Iscandar, she transferred to the Lunar Air Corps as a unit leader and training instructor. She rejoined the Yamato during the Gatlantis Campaign. Later, she participated in the movement to rescue Captain Kodai and his fiancée. By 2202, she commanded the Yamato's fighter squadron. During the Iscandar Incident, her Cosmo Tiger I fighter was destroyed; listed killed in action, she survived via her cockpit's automatic navigation system, which returned her unconscious to the Yamato's engine room. She was later found injured but alive when the ship reappeared in the Time Fault dimension. Her relationships included a familial bond with Kodai, whom she associated with her brother Akio, and evolving interactions with Klaus Keyman during intelligence subplots.
