Description
Ryoma Nagare, a hot-headed martial artist and principal pilot of the New Getter Robo, rises from managing a debt-plagued Shinjuku dojo under yakuza threats to becoming Dr. Saotome’s recruited warrior after proving his combat skills against assassins. His near-superhuman physicality lets him dismantle foes from armed enforcers to supernatural Oni, while his mental resilience shields him from Getter Ray corruption during piloting. Impulsive and confrontational, Ryoma’s abrasive demeanor sparks early clashes with teammates Hayato Jin and Benkei Musashibō, though shared battles forge mutual respect. A vision of humanity enslaved by biomechanical Getters fuels his skepticism, driving him to desert the Saotome Institute temporarily—only to return when ancient threats like the resurrected Abe no Seimei and divine entities demand his intervention.
Displaced to Heian-era Japan, he allies with Minamoto no Raiko against Oni hordes, later confronting Seimei across timelines. A training mishap exposes him to Getter Rays that thrust him into a future ruled by autonomous Getters, deepening his distrust of the machine’s unchecked evolution. Despite this, he remains its pilot, acknowledging its necessity against apocalyptic dangers. His final battle plunges him into a Getter Ray-induced frenzy after allied units are destroyed, halted only by Hayato and Benkei’s intervention. Victorious against the divine foes, he chases a colossal Getter into the enigmatic Getter Valhalla, condemned to endless combat.
Symbolized as the "Spirit" within the Getter Team’s Body-Mind-Spirit triad, Ryoma embodies relentless will and reckless resolve. His arc balances distrust of the Getter’s predatory evolution with his role as its chosen instrument, culminating in an ambiguous fate—estranged from comrades, eternally battling within Getter Valhalla, his conflict with the machine’s legacy unresolved.
