OVA
Description
Mamoru Kusanagi was originally tasked by the Aragami entity Yamata no Orochi to protect the Kushinada lineage. After Orochi killed his parents, seven mitama (Aragami souls) were implanted in his infant body, altering his physiology. This mutation granted him green blood containing chlorophyll, orange skin from carotene, cat-like pupils, and the ability to sprout bladed weapons from his arms. He also developed enhanced strength, agility, and leaping capabilities.

Initially assigned to guard Kaede Kunikida, he formed unresolved emotional ties to her. Following her presumed death, he sought freedom from Orochi by attempting to kill the remaining Kushinada, Momiji Fujimiya. However, their instinctual connection prevented him from harming her. He shifted from adversary to Momiji's protector, joining the Terrestrial Administration Center (TAC) to combat Aragami threats. Early interactions with Momiji featured antagonistic behavior, including frequent teasing about her appearance and undergarments, though their relationship evolved into mutual reliance and romantic affection.

His character arc focused on reconciling his hybrid nature with his desire for humanity. Viewing himself as an unlovable monster, he struggled to accept Momiji's feelings. During a confrontation with the antagonist Murakumo (possessing eight mitama), Kusanagi gained an eighth mitama from Momiji after rescuing her. This equalized their power, enabling him to protect her effectively and completing his transformation from reluctant guardian to committed defender.

In the *Blue Seed Beyond* OVA, set two years later, he distanced himself from Momiji, fearing his Aragami-tainted biology could physically harm her and rejecting her attempts at intimacy. This conflict intensified with the arrival of Valencia Tachibana, another human-mitama hybrid mirroring his struggles. Despite tensions, he reaffirmed his commitment to Momiji while acknowledging cautious emotional and physical boundaries. His role expanded to mentoring Valencia, reflecting his acceptance of his hybrid identity as a tool to guide others.

Across all media, his journey progressed from duty-bound isolation to sacrificial protection, marked by internal conflict over his identity and eventual reconciliation of his dual nature through bonds with Momiji and the TAC.
