Description
Goro is one of the animal companions in the 1968 Toei Animation film Fables from Hans Christian Andersen, serving as a friend to the young protagonist Hans. He is a cat who lives in the town of Odense and is frequently seen alongside another feline named Mimi and a mouse called Keke.

Goro’s personality is defined by his good-natured but somewhat clumsy and impulsive behavior. He has a strong sense of loyalty and a willingness to help his friends, even if his methods are unconventional. Early in the story, Goro is introduced sleeping on the town hall roof when the magical Sandman, Uncle Oley, arrives. Upon seeing the wizard and his mice companions descend using umbrellas, the curious and adventurous Goro immediately tries to mimic the feat, only to fail and tumble ungracefully to the ground. This incident establishes him as an earnest but accident-prone character, providing much of the film's physical comedy.

A key aspect of Goro's role is his romantic pursuit of the female cat Mimi. He is depicted as being deeply in love with her and is not shy about expressing his feelings. His devotion leads him to perform a so-called "aria of a cat in love," serenading Mimi to demonstrate his affection. When Mimi asks him to bring her food, Goro agrees without hesitation, even though she specifically requests a meal from the governor's house. To prove his bravery and win her favor, Goro successfully sneaks into the governor's mansion and steals a duck directly from the festive dinner table. His courageous acts are not solely for romance, however; he also steals a blanket to help a poor girl named Elisa, showing that his underlying motivation is to assist those in need, including Hans and his impoverished friends.

Goro's relationships with the other animal characters are notably harmonious. Unlike the traditional antagonism often depicted between cats and mice, Goro and the mouse Keke are allies who work together on the side of good. Their interactions, along with Goro's adventures in the governor’s palace, are presented in a comedic style that draws from the traditions of American animation, giving the character a lively and sometimes mischievous energy.

Throughout the film, Goro does not undergo a drastic personal transformation, as his primary function is as a loyal, comic sidekick to Hans. His development is more about reinforcing his established traits of bravery and affection through his actions. He consistently supports his human friends by participating in their schemes and using his feline agility for their benefit. Notable among his abilities are his stealth and thievery, which he uses to acquire food and supplies, his agility for climbing and sneaking, and his expressive singing voice, which he employs to court Mimi and add to the film's musical and comedic moments.
