Description
Yu Morisawa is a 10-year-old tomboy with short blue hair, typically dressed in a red t-shirt, white hooded vest, and yellow skirt. Her world hurtles into the extraordinary upon encountering the Feather Star, a flying boat-like spaceship piloted by the alien Pino Pino. As a reward for helping Pino Pino, Yu receives a magical compact granting her one year to transform into a 16-year-old version of herself. She is also assigned two cat-like alien guardians: the supportive Posi and the cynical, spell-holding Nega, both of whom grow protective of her.
Chanting "Pampuru Pimpuru Pampoppun," Yu activates the compact, summons the wand "Kanon," and transforms into Creamy Mami, a purple-haired idol with enhanced beauty and magical abilities. As Mami, she wears a yellow tutu-style dress, red high heels, and a choker. Her powers include time manipulation, object animation, telekinesis, and summoning, though their limits fluctuate. Initially, magic surfaces unconsciously in stressful situations, like stopping time to escape crowds.
Discovered by Shingo Tachibana of Parthenon Productions, Yu is pressured into becoming an idol singer. Adopting the stage name "Creamy Mami" – inspired by her parents' crepe shop, Creamy Crepe – she achieves overnight stardom. Her magically enhanced singing captivates audiences, and she performs with minimal rehearsal, often arriving just in time. This forces Yu into a precarious double life, balancing school, family duties, and her idol career while hiding her secret; exposure means losing her powers.
Yu harbors a precocious crush on her childhood friend, Toshio Otomo, who sees her as a younger sister. After her debut, Toshio becomes infatuated with Creamy Mami, unaware she is Yu, causing Yu jealousy towards her own alter ego. Midori Kisaragi, Toshio's friend, develops comically portrayed feelings for Yu. Their relationship evolves when Toshio accidentally witnesses Yu's transformation, causing her magic to lapse. To restore it, they journey to Feather Star, where Pino Pino erases Toshio's memory in exchange for renewing her power. Toshio eventually discovers the truth and reconciles his feelings, choosing Yu.
Yu's parents, Natsume and Tetsuo Morisawa, run Creamy Crepe and remain oblivious to her secret life. Natsume, a strict former biker gang leader who occasionally uses corporal punishment, contrasts with the more passive Tetsuo; their "retired badass" past occasionally surfaces. Yu faces rivalry from Megumi Ayase, Parthenon's displaced top star, and contends with paparazzi like Snake Joe, determined to expose her.
In the OVA "Long Goodbye," set years later, a 16-year-old Yu, now magic-less, impersonates Creamy Mami with a purple wig for a film role. "Forever Once More" sees Yu and friends investigating fraudulent rumors of Mami's comeback. Crossover OVAs like "Majokko Club Yoningumi: A Kuukan kara no Alien X" feature Yu collaborating with other magical girls against supernatural threats.
Throughout her journey, Yu matures from a mischievous child experimenting with magic into a responsible individual who values relationships over fame. Her fearless curiosity leads to adventures involving ESP users, interdimensional beings, and mythical creatures. While magical, her core struggles revolve around identity, adolescence, and balancing dual lives.
