Description
Shinobu Ijuin serves as a lieutenant in the Japanese army during the Taisho era, distinguished by his blonde hair and mixed Japanese-German heritage. A family pact arranged before his birth binds him in marriage to Benio Hanamura, intended to resolve his grandmother's unrequited love for a Hanamura family member stemming from past societal restrictions. Though initially appearing a traditional military figure, Shinobu exhibits patience and understanding towards Benio's resistance to their union. He observes her unconventional actions—public arguments and deliberate neglect of wifely duties—yet consistently responds with forgiveness and support, revealing his genuine appreciation for her independence.
While serving in Manchuria, Shinobu angers a superior officer and faces reassignment to the Siberian front lines, where he goes missing in action and is presumed dead. He later resurfaces suffering complete amnesia, believing himself the husband of Russian noblewoman Larissa. This memory loss results from severe Siberian injuries; Larissa discovered him, noting his resemblance to her deceased husband, and nursed him back to health. Returning to Japan as Larissa's companion under the identity of a Russian count, his presence creates emotional turmoil when Benio recognizes him.
