Description
Jehan Daas serves as the elderly grandfather to protagonist Nello. He lives in a modest mud hut within a rural 19th-century village near Antwerp. Around eighty years old, he becomes guardian to his two-year-old grandson Nello after his daughter dies in the Ardennes. Though existing in severe poverty, he maintains the hut meticulously, keeping it clean and white like a seashell, cultivating a small garden for basic produce. Advanced age and physical limitations from being a war veteran leave him "crippled," with impaired mobility as the only specified detail; some adaptations attribute this disability to years of hard labor.

His profound compassion manifests when he discovers Patrasche, a working dog brutally beaten and abandoned. Despite his own struggles, Jehan carries the injured animal home. He and Nello nurse the dog back to health over weeks, forging Patrasche's lifelong loyalty and family bond. As his mobility worsens later, he allows Patrasche to help pull their milk cart. Jehan offers Nello unwavering support and gentle guidance, recognizing and nurturing the boy's innate artistic talent despite lacking resources for formal training. He safeguards Nello's childhood, ensuring time for friendships and art alongside work.

Jehan faces external pressures, confronting a merciless landlord who demands higher rent under threat of eviction. This forces Nello into milk delivery work. Jehan's financial situation remains perpetually precarious, often resulting in household hunger. His death occurs offscreen shortly before Christmas, attributed to old age and declining health. This leaves Nello and Patrasche homeless as the landlord evicts them immediately for unpaid rent, removing Nello's primary emotional anchor and protector.

His narrative function embodies quiet dignity amid hardship, unconditional familial love, and moral integrity. His influence persists beyond death as Nello inherits his resilience and ethical principles. His loss fundamentally alters the story's trajectory, triggering Nello's final journey. Adaptations consistently portray him as a kind, principled, and devoted caregiver whose absence creates the pivotal crisis.
