TV-Series
Description
Hikaru Ichijyo is the central protagonist of the Super Dimension Fortress Macross television series. He is a young Japanese man who, at the age of sixteen in the year 2009, is already a highly talented aerobatic flier, having won seven amateur flying contests. His passion for flight was instilled in him by his father, a pilot who was killed in an air show accident. Orphaned after his mother also died when he was young, Hikaru was taken under the wing of his senior colleague and idol, Roy Focker, who became a mentor and surrogate older brother to him.
At the start of the story, Hikaru possesses a happy-go-lucky and somewhat carefree attitude. He is a civilian through and through, with a strong reluctance to join the military as he does not want to be responsible for killing others. His hobby is building plastic model airplanes, showcasing his lifelong dedication to aviation. When Roy invites him to the launch ceremony of the SDF-1 Macross, Hikaru finds himself unexpectedly thrust into a full-scale galactic war with an alien race known as the Zentradi. After a harrowing first battle in which he accidentally pilots a Variable Fighter, he is eventually persuaded by Roy and the young girl he rescues, Lynn Minmay, to formally enlist in the UN Spacy.
Despite his initial reluctance, Hikaru proves to be a naturally gifted pilot with quick instincts and impressive skills. He rapidly gains a reputation for his abilities and natural leadership, earning promotions to Second Lieutenant and later First Lieutenant. Following the death of Roy Focker in combat, Hikaru inherits his mentor's iconic VF-1S Valkyrie fighter, designated Skull One, and takes command of the Skull Squadron. He can be impulsive and has a stubborn streak, sometimes clashing with superior officers when he believes in his own judgment, yet this is balanced by a deep sense of duty and responsibility that grows as the war progresses.
A significant part of Hikaru's character arc revolves around his complicated romantic feelings caught between two very different women. The first is Lynn Minmay, a cheerful and somewhat self-absorbed young woman he rescues and with whom he shares a period of isolation deep within the Macross. He initially develops strong feelings for her, but as she rises to stardom as a cultural icon, their relationship becomes strained. The other is his superior officer, Misa Hayase. Their relationship begins poorly, with Hikaru irreverently calling her an old woman, but it evolves slowly through shared crises and intimate moments. He rescues her from a collapsing Mars base, shares a mission-driven kiss to demonstrate culture to the Zentradi, and they bond further when they become trapped together inside the transformed Macross, revealing their past heartbreaks to one another. Hikaru struggles to be frank about his emotions, which leads to a tense and iconic love triangle that is central to the narrative.
Through the trials of war, including the devastating loss of his subordinate Hayao Kakizaki and his mentor Roy Focker, Hikaru matures from a carefree stunt pilot into a battle-hardened leader. The climax of his emotional development occurs after the near-total destruction of Earth. Hikaru ventures into the ruins of the Alaska base, where he finds and rescues Misa as the sole survivor. In that moment of utter desolation, he realizes that he is happy as long as he is with her. Despite lingering feelings for Minmay, he ultimately chooses Misa. After the war, Hikaru serves as a test pilot on the moon before returning to Earth, where he finally resolves the love triangle. He and Misa marry on October 10, 2011, and their daughter, Miku, is born a year later.
In 2012, Hikaru and Misa are appointed to lead the first great space colonization mission. Misa is named the commander of the SDF-2 Megaroad-01, while Hikaru serves as the captain of its escort Valkyrie group. They depart Earth with their daughter and many civilians, including Lynn Minmay, who remains their friend. However, in 2016, the Megaroad-01 loses all contact with Earth, and the ship, along with Hikaru, his family, and its entire crew and passengers, is declared missing.
