Description
Azuki-Arai is a yōkai character from the Gegege no Kitarō anime, whose design and personality are rooted in Japanese folklore. His name translates to "azuki bean washer," which directly points to his central and defining activity. In his traditional depiction, he is a mysterious creature found near mountain streams, often heard making a "shoki shoki" sound as he washes red azuki beans in a basket or sieve, and sightings of him are considered to bring good luck.

Visually, Azuki-Arai is consistently portrayed as a short, stout, and somewhat grotesque figure. He has large, round, bulbous eyes, a bald head often with tufts of hair on the sides, a thin mustache, and crooked or blocky teeth. His typical attire consists of a sleeveless, dark kimono tied with a simple sash, and he is usually shown without pants, with bristly hair on his limbs and chest. While later versions of the anime from 2007 onward depict him with three-clawed hands and two-clawed feet, his overall appearance is meant to evoke a small, comical, but distinctly supernatural being.

In terms of personality, Azuki-Arai is generally benign and good-natured, though he possesses a singular, all-consuming passion for azuki beans. He is intensely dedicated to washing, grinding, and promoting these beans and often runs a small shop selling traditional bean-based snacks in Yōkai Alley. Despite his cheerful demeanor, he has a petty and irritable side that emerges when azuki beans or the traditions surrounding them are disrespected. This can lead to comedic outbursts, such as when he briefly lashed out against the popularity of Western sweets. His folkloric roots include singing a morbid, teasing song, "Will I wash my azuki beans, or will I get a person to eat?" though this is understood as a prank or a frightening sound rather than a genuine threat.

Azuki-Arai's primary role in the story is that of a recurring ally to the main character, Kitarō. He is a resident of the yōkai world who represents the old ways and traditional yōkai culture, often finding himself struggling to adapt to a modern society that has forgotten or abandoned such traditions. His motivations consistently revolve around preserving and reviving the cultural prominence of azuki beans. A notable example of this occurs in the 2018 anime series, where a frustrated Azuki-Arai, seeing that people prefer Western confections, allows himself to be manipulated by the scheming Nezumi-Otoko into becoming a social media influencer to promote azuki. This plan backfires when another member of his "Azuki Allied Force" becomes more famous, leading to a crisis that is only resolved when he reconciles with his fellow azuki yōkai and returns to a humble, bean-centric life.

His key relationships are primarily with other yōkai who share his affinity for beans, namely Azuki-Hakari and Azuki-Babaa. Together, they form a small community bound by their love for azuki, and his bond with them is strong enough to pull him back from a misguided rampage. He also frequently interacts with Nezumi-Otoko, who often acts as a deceptive and opportunistic instigator, using Azuki-Arai's earnest desires for his own greedy schemes. While he appears in crowds of yōkai opposing major villains, his role is typically episodic and centered on his specific bean-related concerns rather than the larger overarching conflicts.

While Azuki-Arai is not a powerful fighter, he possesses minor supernatural abilities that are directly tied to his nature. He can forcefully blow or propel azuki beans, though this ability is rarely emphasized in combat. However, his beans possess a unique and unexpected power, most notably demonstrated in the 2005 film The Great Yōkai War. In that story, his spilled beans accidentally exploit a mechanized antagonist's critical weakness to azuki beans, triggering a chain reaction that destroys the machine and wins the battle, highlighting that his humble craft can have unforeseen heroic value.
