Description
Athrun Zala was born on October 29, Cosmic Era 55, in the PLANT colony of December City. His father Patrick Zala sent him to study in Copernicus City on the Moon in C.E. 61, where he forged a close friendship with Kira Yamato. Before returning to the PLANTS in C.E. 68, Athrun constructed a robotic bird named Birdy as a parting gift for Kira. Following his return, Patrick arranged Athrun's engagement to PLANT pop idol Lacus Clyne. Athrun crafted a pink robotic companion named Haro for Lacus, eventually producing multiple Haros in different colors for her.
The Bloody Valentine tragedy on February 14, C.E. 70 claimed Athrun's mother, prompting his enrollment at the ZAFT military academy on February 21. There, he excelled academically and physically, ranking first in mobile suit piloting, hand-to-hand combat, and knife-fighting while surpassing renowned instructors. He graduated as the top cadet, narrowly above Yzak Joule—a result fueling Yzak's animosity. Assigned to Rau Le Creuset's team, Athrun befriended Nicol Amalfi and Rusty Mackenzie. Unlike his father, he held divergent views regarding Naturals.
During the Heliopolis raid to steal Earth Alliance mobile suits, Athrun commandeered the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam. He encountered Kira Yamato piloting the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam to protect friends aboard the Archangel, straining their friendship as Athrun repeatedly urged Kira to defect to ZAFT, citing their shared Coordinator heritage. Kira's refusal escalated their battles. When Lacus Clyne was briefly held hostage by the Archangel crew, Athrun's resolve against the Earth Alliance intensified. After Lacus's return, he vowed to kill Kira in their next confrontation.
Nicol Amalfi's death at Kira's hands drove Athrun to a grief-fueled duel where he seemingly destroyed Kira and the Strike by self-destructing his Aegis. Stranded on an island, he encountered Cagalli Yula Athha. Initial conflict yielded to a truce where they debated opposing war perspectives, unaware of each other's identities. Athrun later discovered Cagalli was Orb's princess during a mission near Orb territory.
Promoted and given the ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam by Patrick, Athrun was ordered to retrieve Lacus's stolen ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam and eliminate her. Discovering Kira alive and piloting the Freedom made him question his mission. Confronting Patrick revealed genocidal plans against Naturals; Athrun refused cooperation and was imprisoned. Rescued by the Clyne faction, he defected from ZAFT and joined the Three Ships Alliance with Kira, Lacus, and Cagalli. In the war's climax, he destroyed the GENESIS superweapon by detonating the Justice within it.
Two years later during the Second Bloody Valentine War, Athrun lived incognito as Alex Dino, serving as Cagalli's Orb bodyguard. He rejoined ZAFT at Chairman Gilbert Durandal's request to prevent further conflict. As a FAITH officer and Minerva commander, he piloted the ZGMF-X23S Saviour Gundam and mentored Shinn Asuka, though ideological clashes caused friction. After Kira destroyed the Saviour and Durandal framed him as a traitor, Athrun escaped ZAFT with Meyrin Hawke. Rescued by the Archangel, he received the ZGMF-X19A Infinite Justice Gundam from Lacus and rejoined Kira's faction. He aided in destroying the Requiem superweapon and defeated Shinn in combat during the final battle against Durandal.
In the post-Destiny film, Athrun worked covertly for Terminal instead of joining COMPASS. Piloting a modified Z'Gok, he uncovered the Foundation's conspiracy to reactivate Requiem and implement the Destiny Plan. He later assisted Kira and COMPASS during an ambush, revealing his Z'Gok housed the upgraded Infinite Justice Type II. During a pivotal duel against Foundation ace Shura Serpentine, Athrun resisted Shura's mind-control by focusing on an intimate fantasy of Cagalli—disrupting Shura's focus and enabling victory. Post-conflict, he reunited with Cagalli on Earth, their ongoing relationship confirmed by her wearing the ring he gifted.
Athrun consistently demonstrated exceptional piloting skills across diverse mobile suits, from close-combat specialists like the Aegis and Justice series to general-purpose units like the ZAKU Warrior. His technical aptitude manifested in robotics projects including Birdy and the Haros. Throughout his journey, he navigated loyalty conflicts, moral ambiguity, and war trauma. Evolving from a dutiful ZAFT soldier to an independent agent focused on ending violence cycles, he often mediated between opposing forces like Kira and Shinn.
