Description
Cagalli Yula Athha, born Cagalli Hibiki in May C.E. 55 on the Mendel Colony, is the daughter of geneticists Ulen and Via Hibiki and the fraternal twin sister of Kira Yamato. While Kira was removed prematurely for Ulen's Ultimate Coordinator project and placed in an artificial womb, Cagalli was born naturally. Following an attack by Blue Cosmos extremists that killed their parents, the twins were separated. Cagalli was entrusted to Uzumi Nara Athha, Chief Representative of the Orb Union, who adopted and raised her as his daughter in Orb. Kira remained with their maternal aunt, Caridad Yamato. Neither knew of the other's existence during childhood.
Raised in Orb as a princess, Cagalli developed a rebellious, free-spirited, and tomboyish personality, often rejecting formalities and the princess title. She gained considerable skill in hand-to-hand combat, firearms, and military tactics. In C.E. 71, suspecting Orb was secretly developing mobile suits for the Earth Alliance, she traveled to Heliopolis. There, she witnessed the Alliance's G-weapon development and encountered Kira during ZAFT's attack on the colony. Kira pushed her into an evacuation shelter that separated as a lifeboat during the colony's destruction.
Cagalli surfaced in the ZAFT-occupied Northern Africa Desert, joining the resistance group Desert Dawn. She earned the nickname "Goddess of Victory" for her contributions. Encountering the Earth Alliance ship *Archangel* and its crew, including Kira piloting the Strike Gundam, their reunion sparked conflicts over ideals and methods. After a failed retaliatory attack against ZAFT commander Andrew Waltfeld caused casualties, Cagalli received mobile suit training aboard the *Archangel*. She piloted an FX-550 Skygrasper in battles, demonstrating aptitude despite initial reliance on AI assistance.
When the *Archangel* sought refuge in Orb, Cagalli revealed her identity as Uzumi's daughter. She later encountered ZAFT pilot Athrun Zala in the Marshall Islands after he seemingly killed Kira in combat. Distraught, she confronted Athrun but released him, giving him a red stone pendant sacred to Orb's goddess Haumea. Learning Kira survived, she reunited with him during the Alliance's invasion of Orb. Before Orb's fall, Uzumi gave Cagalli a photograph revealing Kira as her twin brother. Escaping aboard the *Kusanagi*, she joined the Three Ships Alliance and piloted the MBF-02 Strike Rouge mobile suit. She participated in the Battle of Jachin Due, assisting Athrun in destroying the GENESIS superweapon.
Post-war, Cagalli became Chief Representative of the restored Orb Union. By C.E. 75, she faced political challenges from pro-Alliance factions like the Seiran family. During a diplomatic visit to PLANT, she met Chairman Gilbert Durandal to discuss ZAFT's militarization. Manipulated into an alliance with the Earth Alliance, she agreed to an arranged marriage with Yuna Roma Seiran. Kira intervened, extracting her from the wedding. Returning to Orb, she opposed the Seirans' military actions and reclaimed her authority, ordering Orb's forces to stand down during a battle with ZAFT's *Minerva*. During ZAFT's subsequent invasion of Orb to capture Logos leader Lord Djibril, Uzumi's will granted her the ORB-01 Akatsuki Gundam, a mobile suit coated with anti-beam reflective armor. Piloting the Akatsuki, she defended Orb and led counterattacks against ZAFT forces.
Cagalli fiercely opposed Durandal's Destiny Plan to genetically predetermine human roles. The Special Edition adaptations of *Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny* depict additional scenes: her interactions with Durandal at Armory One, her emotional farewell to Athrun before his departure to PLANT, her role in Orb's defense, and her participation in peace negotiations with ZAFT after the Battle of Messiah. Following the conflict, she remained in Orb as its leader, focusing on reconstruction and diplomacy.
Cagalli possesses the rare SEED factor, a genetic trait enabling heightened combat awareness and reflexes during extreme stress or emotional duress. This makes her the only known Natural to exhibit this ability, triggered during intense battles like the deaths of comrades in the First Alliance-PLANT War.
