Description
Choji Marukura, known to most as Marucho, is the primary Aquos brawler of the Bakugan Battle Brawlers and a central figure throughout the events of Bakugan Battle Brawlers: New Vestroia. He comes from a wealthy family, a background that affords him access to resources and technology that he often uses to aid his friends, yet he is notably generous and never arrogant about his status.
Marucho is widely recognized as the intellectual core of the Brawlers. He possesses a deep, encyclopedic knowledge of Bakugan species, attributes, and battle strategies, and he approaches brawling with a methodical, analytical mindset. He enjoys studying the game and devising complex plans, often working out which Bakugan or combination would be most effective against an opponent. This makes him an invaluable strategist for the team.
At the start of New Vestroia, Marucho is slightly older, now thirteen years old, and his personality has matured. He remains polite, courteous, and a little cautious by nature, but he has grown more confident and independent. During the original series, he had struggled with an overwhelming fear of disappointing his wealthy parents, leading to extreme obedience. His journey as a Brawler helped him overcome that fear, and by New Vestroia he has embraced his own identity and decisions, holding no regrets about his past.
His primary motivation in New Vestroia is to rescue his original partner, Preyas, who was captured and turned into a statue by the Vestals, the alien race that has invaded and enslaved the Bakugan of New Vestroia. When Marucho follows Dan and Drago into the new world, he witnesses the oppression firsthand and immediately joins the Resistance, the group of Vestals and Bakugan fighting for freedom. His personal mission to find a new partner leads him to Elfin, a playful and energetic Aquos Bakugan who initially tests his worthiness. After proving himself, Marucho and Elfin form a strong bond, with Elfin eventually evolving into Minx Elfin later in the season.
Within the story, Marucho acts as both a supportive ally and a tactical anchor for the Resistance. He frequently analyzes enemy patterns and assists with mission planning. He also plays a key role in the development of Bakugan Interspace, a virtual battling arena that later becomes a major element of the franchise. In New Vestroia, the early groundwork for this system begins with his technological contributions.
Marucho's key relationships include his close friendship with Dan, whose more impulsive and headstrong nature balances Marucho's careful deliberation. He also forms a strong bond with Mira, the leader of the Resistance, and works well with the other members, including Ace and Baron. His loyalty to his friends is unwavering, and he often serves as the voice of reason and caution when the team rushes into danger. He is also deeply caring toward his Bakugan partners, treating them as equals and friends rather than tools.
Throughout New Vestroia, Marucho experiences significant development. He starts the season feeling somewhat helpless without his original partner and needing to adapt to the Vestals' new brawling system. By the end, he has not only won back Preyas but also grown into a confident brawler in his own right, capable of leading battles and making critical decisions under pressure. His loss of attribute energy to Hydron and Shadow Prove in one battle tests his resolve, but he continues fighting for the cause.
In terms of abilities, Marucho is a master of combination play and specializes in the Aquos attribute. He is highly skilled at using his Bakugan's unique abilities to exploit gate cards and adapt to opponents' strategies. With Elfin, he employs fluid, adaptive tactics that mirror the water element's nature: calm and controlled at times, powerful and overwhelming at others. He also becomes proficient in using Bakugan Traps, such as Tripod Epsilon, adding another layer of tactical depth to his brawling. His greatest strength, however, remains his intellect and his capacity to process information quickly during a battle, often finding a way to turn the tide through cleverness rather than raw power.
