Description
Edward Elric, born in Resembool, Amestris, to Trisha Elric and Van Hohenheim, faced early abandonment when his father left. Following Trisha's death from illness in 1904, Edward and his younger brother Alphonse attempted forbidden human transmutation to revive her. The ritual failed catastrophically, costing Edward his left leg. To retrieve Alphonse's soul from the metaphysical Truth, Edward sacrificed his right arm, binding his brother's soul to a suit of armor. This encounter granted Edward advanced alchemical knowledge, enabling him to perform transmutations without circles by clapping. Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako crafted automail prosthetics to replace his lost limbs. At age 12, Edward became the youngest State Alchemist, receiving the title "Fullmetal Alchemist," and embarked on a quest with Alphonse to find the Philosopher's Stone and restore their bodies.

Physically, Edward stood 149 cm (4'11") at age 15. He possessed golden-blond hair, often braided or ponytailed, and a distinctive upward strand ("ahoge") intentionally styled to add height, complemented by gold eyes reflecting his Xerxesian heritage. His attire typically included a red hooded cloak bearing the Flamel symbol of his teacher Izumi Curtis, black clothing, elevator-soled boots, and gloves concealing his automail. A scar above his right eye from early battles faded by the series' end. His initial automail limbs—a full right arm and left leg—were later replaced with lighter, cold-resistant versions in the north. By adulthood, he grew significantly taller, surpassing Winry Rockbell and matching Alphonse's height.

Edward displayed a complex personality: stubborn, quick-tempered, and intensely sensitive about his height, often reacting violently to related remarks. Deep guilt over the transmutation incident and Nina Tucker's chimera fate fueled his self-sacrificing loyalty to Alphonse. Despite cynicism, he championed justice, equivalent exchange, and human dignity, refusing to kill even in combat. He respected capable female figures like Izumi Curtis, Riza Hawkeye, and Olivier Armstrong, rejecting gender-based limitations. His growth involved learning to accept help, process grief, and prioritize human connections over alchemy. Ultimately, he abandoned both his height complex and alchemy entirely to build a family.

Key relationships defined his journey. Alphonse served as his emotional anchor and primary motivation; Edward consistently prioritized his brother's safety, even offering his life to Scar. Winry Rockbell, his childhood friend and automail mechanic, became his wife; their mutual support involved her maintaining his limbs and him dissuading her from vengeance. Izumi Curtis, his martial arts and alchemy teacher, acted as a maternal figure, commanding his unwavering respect. Roy Mustang functioned as both a foil and mentor, with Edward challenging Roy's wartime actions while gaining military backing for his goals. Ling Yao and Lan Fan earned his respect through their resolve, broadening his worldview.

Edward's combat abilities blended martial arts training from Izumi, alchemy, and automail utility. Proficient in hand-to-hand combat, he leveraged his small stature for agility to evade attacks. His automail limbs provided defensive and offensive advantages, sometimes featuring integrated blades or spikes. Post-transmutation, his circle-free alchemy allowed spontaneous transmutations, creating barriers or restructuring environments. He applied scientific knowledge creatively, such as decomposing dynamite into ammonia gas. After sacrificing his alchemy gate to restore Alphonse, he focused solely on family life, adopting Hohenheim's appearance while forging his own path.

His development spanned physical, emotional, and philosophical realms. Initially driven by guilt and a transactional view of equivalent exchange, he learned that human experiences like love and hope transcended alchemy. He reconciled with Hohenheim, acknowledging his father's sacrifices. Post-restoration, he married Winry, fathered two children, and traveled without alchemy, embodying his embrace of human imperfection over supernatural power.
