Description
Recruited by Aoi Formula owner Kyoko Aoi after winning two European F3 championships, Naoki Shinjyo debuted in the 2015 Cyber Formula season. His early promise delivered a podium in his second race and a victory in the fourth round. However, the Sugo team's Super Asurada 01 triggered intense rivalry with Hayato Kazami and Karl Richter von Randoll. Shinjyo's pride, compounded by technical setbacks like an engine blowout, led to a slump marked by reckless driving and strained team relations, culminating in Aoi Formula's demotion to a secondary team.
His decline deepened when Kyoko Aoi formed Aoi ZIP Formula mid-season, leaving Shinjyo with the original squad. A confrontation by mechanic Miki Jounouchi over his disrespectful attitude and poor discipline sparked a resurgence. Shinjyo notched consecutive finishes of fifth, third, and first, ultimately securing second place in the 2015 championship after a close final race against Hayato.
In 2016, piloting the upgraded Fire Superion GTO-15B, Shinjyo maintained competitive form with consistent top finishes, though he again placed second overall. During the final race, he deliberately sacrificed his lead alongside others to facilitate a duel between Knight Schumacher and Hayato, indirectly aiding Hayato's victory.
Shinjyo claimed his sole World Championship title in 2017 under unusual circumstances. A severe accident at the British Grand Prix sidelined primary rivals Hayato Kazami and Karl Richter von Randoll, removing significant competition.
Performance struggles resurfaced at the start of 2018, nearly causing his dismissal from Aoi ZIP Formula. An intervention by Bleed Kaga and Shinjyo's accidental discovery of the "Zero-Realm" driving state during the Asian Grand Prix salvaged his career, with victory securing his team position. Later that season, Miki Jounouchi transferred to Aoi as his chief mechanic, solidifying their partnership.
Dismissed by Aoi before the 2020 opener after the Al-Zard NP-1 outperformed his car in tests, Shinjyo spent most of the season competing in the United States with Miki. Following a proposal by Randoll, he joined Union Savior mid-season, competing incognito as former teammate Knight Schumacher. Hayato and Asuka later publicly revealed his true identity, and he raced under his real name for the remainder of the season, achieving a significant victory in the 11th round by defeating Fritz and securing a 1–2 finish with Randoll. He remained with Union Savior for the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Shinjyo returned to Aoi ZIP Formula in 2023 following Bleed Kaga's retirement, partnering with former Sugo test driver Seiichirou Shiba. His relationship with Miki Jounouchi evolved from professional collaboration into a committed romantic partnership across his career, with Miki serving as a stabilizing influence during professional challenges. His family background positions him as head of a tea ceremony school, and his documented skills extend beyond racing to include skiing and jet skiing.
