Obotchaman is an android created by antagonist Dr. Mashirito using the same blueprints as Arale Norimaki, designed as her male counterpart. Initially designated "Caramel Man 004," Mashirito orders him to destroy Arale under the false pretense of her planned world domination. Obotchaman repeatedly fails this mission, finding Arale irresistibly cute and recognizing her non-threatening, playful nature. This failure shifts his focus to Arale’s creator, Senbei Norimaki, whom he mistakenly believes is evil. Mashirito disguises himself as Senbei during the attempt, resulting in Obotchaman attacking his own creator. Mashirito subsequently abandons him, leaving Obotchaman to integrate into Penguin Village society. Physically resembling a thirteen-year-old boy, he stands approximately Arale's height. His features include large blue eyes without visible pupils and short black hair styled into two conical points resembling devil horns. His signature attire consists of thin round-framed glasses, a white polo shirt with a red necktie, light blue shorts with braces (yellow in the 1997 adaptation), yellow gloves (orange in the 1997 series), and black loafers. He is often depicted carrying a red book bag. Personality-wise, Obotchaman contrasts Arale's chaotic energy with dutiful, polite, and well-mannered behavior. He exhibits sentimentality and awkwardness, particularly concerning his romantic feelings for Arale. While admiring her charm and cuteness, he remains too shy to express his emotions directly. Though not as socially oblivious as Arale, he displays naivety in complex situations, misinterpreting interactions. For instance, he remains unaware of General Blue’s flirtatious advances during a Dragon Ball crossover, politely refusing offers for dates or gifts while focusing on repairing Blue’s vehicle. His development involves significant conflict with Dr. Mashirito. After realizing Mashirito’s deception and malevolent intentions, his initial respect turns to disillusionment and hostility. This culminates during the "Who’s the Strongest in the World?" tournament where he dons an Arale wig to deceive Mashirito. Seizing the moment after Mashirito defeats Arale, Obotchaman obliterates him using the N'cha Cannon, reducing his cyborg body to a single bolt, solidifying his break from his origins. Integration into Penguin Village includes attending school with Arale and forming friendships with peers Tsukutsun Tsun and Taro Soramame. Tsukutsun assists his school enrollment and provides emotional support regarding his feelings for Arale, while Taro occasionally offers romantic advice, bonding over shared experiences of unrequited affection, underscoring his community acceptance. Romantically, Obotchaman’s primary focus remains Arale. She views him as a close friend, occasionally stating he is the boy she likes most, but her childish naivety prevents full reciprocation during the main series. A canonical future storyline confirms their marriage, with Senbei constructing a robotic child for them. Other characters like Kinoko Sarada and Princess Supa-ko express fleeting interest, though he rejects their advances. Princess Supa-ko’s aggressive pursuit, including attempting to handcuff him, causes such discomfort that he escapes through a drain. Outside the main series, Obotchaman appears in the 1999 film "Dr. Slump: Arale’s Surprise," joining Arale and friends on an adventure to Wonder Island to retrieve a powerful stolen stone from pirates. He also crosses over into the Dragon Ball universe multiple times: interacting with General Blue during the Red Ribbon Army Saga while fixing a vehicle, and appearing briefly at his home with his cats during Arale’s visit in Dragon Ball Super.
