OVA
Description
Ivan is a prominent antagonist from the animated OVA, serving as the primary henchman and personal aide to Lord Alberto, a high-ranking member of the global super-criminal organization known as Big Fire. He holds the title of a powerful esper, granting him abilities such as superhuman speed that enhance his combat effectiveness, and he is also the designated pilot of one of Big Fire's most formidable mecha, the robot named Uranus.
In his role within the story, Ivan is a steadfast operative who spearheads key assaults against the organization's adversaries, the Experts of Justice. During a major attack on an Interpol base in Peking, he commands Uranus to intercept Dr. Shizuma, the inventor of the Shizuma Drive, as the doctor is being evacuated. His actions lead to a confrontation with Giant Robo, which is summoned to protect its master, Daisaku Kusama. During this encounter, Ivan demonstrates his cunning by taking the young Daisaku hostage, using the opportunity to recount the Tragedy of Bashtarle, an event of great historical significance to the characters. He later shoots Dr. Shizuma when the doctor activates a prototype device that generates an anti-Shizuma field, temporarily disabling Uranus and other technology. Demonstrating resourcefulness, Ivan escapes this first battle by detaching Uranus's head from its body and fleeing as the remainder of the robot self-destructs.
Ivan's motivations are defined by unwavering loyalty to Lord Alberto and the goals of Big Fire. He is a disciplined and capable agent, showing no hesitation in carrying out ruthless orders or engaging enemy forces. His key relationships are centered on his service to Lord Alberto, whom he accompanies throughout his missions, and his adversarial dynamic with the Experts of Justice, particularly Daisaku Kusama and Giant Robo.
His development throughout the narrative culminates in his final mission in Shanghai. Ivan pilots a rebuilt version of Uranus to dismantle a strategic plan devised by the Experts of Justice, targeting a series of magnetic webbing devices. During the ensuing battle, Daisaku Kusama arrives with Giant Robo against orders. Ivan and Uranus are lured dangerously close to the immobilized Eye of Volger, a massive object emitting an anti-Shizuma field. As Uranus powers down from the field's effects, Giant Robo delivers a decisive uppercut that decapitates the robot. The resulting explosion kills Ivan, marking the definitive end of his service to Big Fire.
As an esper, Ivan's personal abilities include his superhuman speed, which aids him in both tactical maneuvers and direct combat. However, his primary offensive capability comes from piloting Uranus, a robot with several notable features. Uranus is powered by a Shizuma Drive, moves via levitation, and is equipped with a protective energy force field that can repel attacks. Its weapon systems include destructive sonic waves and lasers emitted from its eyes, and its legs can transform into a drill for burrowing underground. A key tactical feature is its modular head, which can detach from the main body to fly, travel underwater, or even transform into a car for escape, a feature Ivan himself utilizes.
