OVA
Description
Joe Kuruma is the chief detective at the Kuruma Detective Agency, proclaiming himself the "Second Generation Sherlock Holmes" despite possessing third-rate and incompetent detective skills. His self-importance leads him to refuse cases that don't satisfy his pride, causing significant financial instability. He is three years behind on rent due to his selective casework and a lack of clients over that period.
Despite his professional shortcomings, he frequently inserts himself into investigations, often worsening situations and earning a reputation as a troublemaker. His fashion sense is decent, but his appearance is marred by several missing front teeth attributed to excessive milk consumption, leading others like Baron to comment he would look better if he didn't smile.
He carries a water gun resembling a real pistol, sometimes adding sleeping pills to incapacitate targets, and employs his hat as an improvised weapon. Primarily a comedic figure, he occasionally demonstrates unexpected resourcefulness.
In episode 15 of the original series, a dream sequence depicts him transforming into the superhero Typhoon Horamar after donning a blue plastic bucket-shaped helmet called Horamet. In this form, he wears a blue battle suit with powers surpassing Polymar. This alter ego appears as a support character in the video game *Tatsunoko Fight*. In the final episode, he mutters in his sleep about being Horamar.
He discovers Takeshi Yoroi's secret identity as Polymar, leading to a fresh start where Kuruma welcomes Yoroi back as the new chief detective. He maintains a strained connection with Teru Nanba, whose father owns the building housing his agency, due to his chronic rent delinquency.
In crossover media like the *Time Bokan* OVA, he fights alongside other Tatsunoko heroes, wearing a black tunic and emblem instead of the traditional aqua color. He also appears in civilian form in a 2008 *Yatterman* remake cameo based on his OVA design and is a playable character in *Tatsunoko vs. Capcom*. His hometown is in the countryside, where his family operates the Himadana Ranch dairy farm.
