Description
Kaitou Kid, the legendary phantom thief, operates across eras under multiple identities. The mantle began with Toichi Kuroba, a world-renowned stage magician who performed jewel heists in Paris eighteen years prior. Toichi adopted the persona after designing his iconic white suit for a Lupin-themed performance, using it to rescue the Phantom Lady before her retirement. His activities ended when a mysterious organization seeking Pandora—a gem rumored to grant immortality during a comet's passing—murdered him during a staged magic accident after he refused to help them locate the gem.

Eight years after Toichi's death, his attendant Konosuke Jii briefly became Kaitou Kid, attempting to lure out the murderers with two heists. Toichi's son, Kaito Kuroba, then discovered his father's secret room and claimed the identity. As a 17-year-old Ekoda High School student, Kaito revived Kid's global fame to expose his father's killers. During the "Blue Birthday" heist, he encountered the organization and learned their goal: finding Pandora within large jewels. Kaito vowed to find and destroy Pandora first, shifting his heists to target large gems examined under moonlight.

Kaito shares a paternal first cousin relationship with Shinichi Kudo (Conan Edogawa), revealed during the "Million-dollar Pentagram" heist through their fathers, Yusaku Kudo and Toichi Kuroba. This explains their physical resemblance, enabling Kaito to impersonate Shinichi without masks.

Kaito exhibits compulsive showmanship, issuing advance heist notices and crafting elaborate escapes. He thrives on challenging authorities, often evading capture at the last moment. Despite being a thief, he follows a moral code: returning non-Pandora gems, avoiding harm, and protecting civilians. He possesses an unexplained ichthyophobia (fear of fish). His skills encompass mastery of disguise, ventriloquism, lock-picking, escapology, and stage magic, aided by gadgets like a hang-glider cape and card gun.

During the "Million-dollar Pentagram" case, Kid stole two wakizashi swords linked to Toshizo Hijikata, driven by personal curiosity about a treasure his father once attempted to steal. Detective Heiji Hattori struck off his hat and monocle, briefly revealing his face and startling Heiji with its likeness to Shinichi. Kid later allied with Conan and Heiji against arms dealer Brian D. Kadokura, who sought the same treasure. Kid impersonated Kadokura's subordinate, disarmed bombs, and aided in the final confrontation.

In his civilian life as Kaito Kuroba, he maintains his identity as a magician while navigating relationships with childhood friend Aoko Nakamori (daughter of Kid-obsessed Inspector Ginzo Nakamori), rival detective Saguru Hakuba, and witch Akako Koizumi. His mother, Chikage Kuroba—formerly the thief Phantom Lady—knows of his double life.
