TV-Series
Description
Akina Myōdō is a high school student living with his father and younger sister, Hikari. Due to his father's demanding job and Hikari's chronic health issues, Akina shoulders significant domestic responsibilities. This caregiving instinct extends beyond his family, leading him to clean Suo Yobitsugi's apartment and ensure Suo avoids rain.
Akina has short dark blue hair featuring a prominent red-and-white streaked cowlick. He typically wears a long-sleeved shirt with red and white striped sleeves over a black undershirt, grey pants, and red shoes with white accents. His sister Hikari shares a similar hair streak, prompting fan comparisons to Japanese ginger (myoga).
A pivotal mountain camping trip shaped Akina's history. Hikari suffered altitude sickness near the summit while unattended; Akina blamed himself for her subsequent lung deterioration and frequent hospitalizations, fueling deep-seated guilt. His encounter with the entity Gabwelius introduced him to the card game Vanguard and the Fated Clash tournament. Seeing it as a chance to wish for Hikari's recovery, Akina learned the game from coworker Nao Inabe, building a Keter Sanctuary deck focused on "Fated One of Miracles, Rezael".
As a cardfighter, Akina employs an aggressive style leveraging Rezael's abilities to call multiple units during attacks. His signature strategy maximizes critical triggers while minimizing defense. Rezael's Divine Skill lets him shuffle critical triggers from his drop zone into his deck, perform three drive checks, and potentially heal at five damage. In critical matches, like against Taizo Kiyokura, he removed all heal and sentinel cards to maximize offense, later adjusting his deck to include defense. Akina also possesses "Design Force," a power enabling in-game miracles and resistance to supernatural effects like Sybilt's Spirit Corruption.
The Fated Clash catalyzed Akina's growth. He progressed against experienced opponents despite being a beginner, defeating Nao, Taizo, and Suo in the finals. During his final match against Suo, a future Hikari intervened, revealing Akina's defeat in her timeline caused his death and the stage's destruction. She gave Akina "Liael-Amorta," designed to counter Suo's "Fated One of Zero, Blangdmire." Akina used it to survive Blangdmire's Divine Skill, reactivate his own miracles, and defeat Suo, winning Hikari's recovery. His victory also helped Suo process his parents' death trauma. Post-tournament, Akina integrated Suo into his circle, with Suo insisting on daily cardfights.
After curing Hikari, Akina focused more on family but continued Vanguard. During Divinez Deluxe events, he confronted his personal aspirations beyond Hikari's well-being. Encouraged by Yakumo Kagetsu, Akina developed his dream to become a professional fighter. He refined his deck, incorporating cards like "Miracle Phantom Beast Liphistol" and optimizing his strategy to consistently activate Rezael's Divine Skill, marking his transition to self-defined goals.
Akina maintains significant relationships. His protective bond with Hikari forms his emotional core. Mentorship under Nao Inabe extends beyond Vanguard into life skills like cooking. He develops complex friendships with rivals Suo and Taizo. Interactions with Gabwelius propel him into supernatural conflicts. His caring nature and culinary skills make him popular among female acquaintances, though he flusters when teased about potential romantic feelings for Nao. A recurring phrase, "Even though it's just a glimmer of hope, a miracle will descend upon those who reach out their hand," originates from Nao, who said it to calm him after Hikari's mountain accident—a memory he initially forgot but later reclaimed.
