Description
Yahya is a prominent character in Beastars who holds the title of the Sublime Beastar. He is a horse with a near-black coat and a darker black crest, appearing to be in his late thirties or early forties despite being fifty-one years old, a youthful look he maintains through a healthy diet. A constant and distinctive feature of his appearance is the blindfold he almost always wears, which he uses to suppress his natural 350-degree field of vision to avoid being overwhelmed. Due to his role, he often employs disguises, such as dressing as a zebra, to move among criminals undetected.

At first glance, Yahya can seem friendly and reliable, a natural impression for an animal in his position. However, this surface-level demeanor masks a deeply manipulative and morally complex personality. His overwhelming desire is to bring about justice and enact meaningful change in a society fraught with tension between herbivores and carnivores. To achieve this goal, he is willing to use any means necessary, often manipulating other animals as tools to an end. This ruthless pragmatism has earned him many enemies, with death threats frequently graffitied on the walls surrounding the Black Market. His methods are so extreme that he is known as the Black Devil by the residents of the Black Market, a title stemming from his practice of using the bodies of carnivores he has punished as fertilizer for his carrot farm. This hypocrisy and capacity for cruelty extend beyond carnivores, as he has also been seen threatening herbivores during interrogations.

Yahya's motivations and his entire worldview are rooted in a pivotal event from his youth. At the age of fifteen, he was a police partner and best friend to Gosha, a komodo dragon. Together, they were a formidable crime-fighting duo, so effective that they reduced a district's crime rate by forty percent and were considered prime candidates to become the next Beastars as a team. Their shared dream came to an abrupt end when Gosha fell in love with a grey wolf the pair had saved. Gosha chose to abandon their ambition to become a Beastar and start a family, an act that Yahya viewed as an unforgivable act of treason. Feeling deeply betrayed and abandoned, Yahya swore to continue the path of justice alone, dedicating his life to becoming the Sublime Beastar and reshaping society according to his own vision.

This bitter history defines Yahya's key relationships. He harbors a simmering resentment and loathing for his former friend Gosha, holding a grudge for the thirty-six years he has spent protecting the city by himself. Despite Yahya's animosity, Gosha still considers him a dear friend and cares for his well-being. Yahya's complex feelings extend to Gosha's grandson, Legoshi. Upon discovering Legoshi's criminal record and his lineage, Yahya becomes intensely interested in the young wolf, seeing him as a potential tool to fill the void left by Gosha and to assist in his brand of justice. He recruits Legoshi to help capture a dangerous criminal named Melon, and the two work together as reluctant partners, though Legoshi openly disapproves of Yahya's brutal methods. Through this partnership, Yahya also attempts to recreate the perfect 360-degree vision he once shared with Gosha, as his natural 350-degree sight leaves a ten-degree blind spot that only a trusted partner can cover.

Throughout the story, Yahya experiences little traditional development as he remains steadfast in his convictions. His role is primarily as an antagonistic force, representing the extreme end of societal order and justice. He is a powerful figure who is not afraid to get his hands dirty, believing that the ends always justify the means, no matter how brutal or hypocritical those means may be. His abilities are considerable, stemming from his species and decades of experience. Aside from his nearly 360-degree vision, which he uses to fight multiple opponents at once, he is a highly skilled hand-to-hand combatant and an expert in marksmanship, often using a tranquilizer gun. He is also a master of disguise and possesses genius-level intelligence, having dedicated over three decades to fighting crime and pursuing his own strict definition of justice.
