Description
Dryme is a male dragon from the anime Farming Life in Another World, known as the Gate Dragon for his crucial role in halting the southward spread of monsters from the Forest of Death. He is the eldest son and third child of the prominent dragons Dors and Raimeiren, placing him in a distinguished lineage. His first encounter with the protagonist, Hiraku Machio, marks the beginning of a lasting connection with Great Tree Village, of which he becomes a familiar and frequent visitor.
In his true form, Dryme is an immense dragon measuring approximately thirty meters in length, with a powerful and guardian-like presence. When interacting with the villagers, he takes on the appearance of a tall, middle-aged man. His human expression is often described as timid and gentle, which reflects his reserved nature. He struggles with conversation when meeting new people and can come across as shy with strangers, but beneath this initial awkwardness lies a caring, dependable, and responsible personality. He is known to enjoy good food and drink, often grumbling amiably to Hiraku about his duties during his visits.
As the Gate Dragon, Dryme’s primary motivation is his duty to keep the monsters of the Forest of Death from moving south, a role that defines much of his life and choices. However, he is also strongly motivated by a love for good cooking and alcohol, which initially draws him to Great Tree Village. He demonstrates a profound passion for daikon radishes, insisting on harvesting them himself at the village and enthusiastically researching and experimenting with daikon-based recipes. This culinary curiosity becomes a cheerful counterpoint to his serious responsibilities.
Dryme’s role in the story is multifaceted. He is first and foremost a powerful guardian and a reliable ally to Great Tree Village. He serves as a long-distance transporter, volunteering for early trade missions with Howlin Village and later transporting the Minotaur tribe to what would become the Second Village. He also acts as a mediator during dragon-related incidents, using his position and knowledge to help resolve conflicts. His frequent overnight visits to the village lead the residents to build a large villa for his exclusive use.
His key relationships are central to his character development. He forms a friendly bond with Hiraku Machio, built on regular visits, shared meals, and a habit of bringing valuable gifts that far exceed the cost of his lodging and food. The dragon Gucci acts as his advisor, first suggesting he visit Great Tree Village to avoid hostility with Hiraku and later counseling him against relocating there permanently because his gatekeeping work would disrupt the villagers. His family life becomes a significant source of both joy and complication. Lastismoon is his daughter, and after she moves to Great Tree Village, he increases his visits under the pretext of seeing her, only to reduce his frequency again when Hakuren, another family member, relocates there to avoid awkward encounters. Graffaloon is his future wife, a white dragon known as the White Dragon Princess. Before their marriage, she would often tease him, a dynamic that contrasts with his more reserved demeanor.
Dryme experiences notable development through the story’s events. His relationship with Great Tree Village begins as a strategic visit to avoid conflict with Hiraku, who had previously shot down wyverns, but it quickly evolves into genuine friendship. He once declared his desire to relocate to the village permanently, but heeded Gucci’s advice against it, showing his sense of responsibility. A major misunderstanding arises when his private villa and frequent overnight stays lead Lastismoon and Graffaloon to wrongly suspect him of infidelity. This suspicion escalates into an assault on Great Tree Village in year seven, which Dryme himself has to help halt while explaining the true circumstances. This event highlights his unfortunate luck and his role as a mediator even in conflicts involving his own family.
Dryme possesses several notable abilities. He can shift between his immense dragon form and a more compact human form, enabling both powerful combat and diplomatic interaction. As a guardian dragon, he is capable of powerful aerial combat, as evidenced by his readiness to counter threats such as wyverns. Furthermore, he is routinely relied upon for his ability to perform long-distance transport, a skill that proves invaluable for trade and the migration of other species.
