TV-Series
Description
Miyabi Shinohara is introduced as an apprentice sommelier working in a French restaurant, possessing a deep and extensive knowledge of wine. Despite her strong theoretical foundation and demonstrated talent for wine tasting, she has repeatedly failed to pass the official Sommelier qualification exam, a setback often attributed to a combination of bad luck and a possible lack of intuitive understanding. Her academic approach to wine is a defining trait, as she relies heavily on book knowledge and established facts, which contrasts with the more instinctual and sensory-based abilities of the main protagonist, Shizuku Kanzaki. Her professional circumstances lead her to be hired as a consultant for the wine department of Sun Beer, a move that places her directly alongside Shizuku as he begins his quest.

In terms of personality, Miyabi is dedicated and knowledgeable, but she is also portrayed as being somewhat bookish, a trait that Shizuku frequently teases her about. A recurring comedic element in her personal life involves her habit of inviting a male friend to her apartment to share wine, which almost invariably ends with her becoming intoxicated and waking up with no memory of having undressed down to her underwear. This running gag highlights a more vulnerable and less composed side to her character, contrasting with her professional demeanor.

Her primary role in the story is that of a crucial supporter and partner to Shizuku. She provides him with the essential factual and technical knowledge about wine regions, producers, and vintages, effectively serving as his reference guide. This partnership is vital because while Shizuku possesses a superhuman sense of taste and smell, he initially lacks formal wine education. Miyabi's knowledge helps to interpret and contextualize the powerful sensory impressions that Shizuku experiences. Their relationship is central, with Miyabi harboring special romantic feelings for him, and the two are almost always seen together as they collaborate on the challenges presented by the inheritance contest.

Key relationships shape her role significantly. Her connection with Shizuku is the most important, evolving from a professional acquaintance to a close partnership. She is also shown to have a mentor in Shiro Fujieda, the owner and sommelier of the wine bar Monopole, who serves as a trusted counselor for both her and Shizuku. Within the wine department at Taiyo Beer, she works alongside other colleagues, including the Italian wine enthusiast Chosuke Honma and the junior employee Ryuuuke Kido, forming a team that supports Shizuku in his competition against his rival, Issei Tomine.

Throughout the narrative, Miyabi's development is tied to her shifting from a purely academic wine lover to a more well-rounded professional. Her initial inability to pass the sommelier exam suggests a gap between her theoretical knowledge and the practical, intuitive aspects of wine service. By supporting Shizuku and witnessing his unorthodox but effective methods, she gains a deeper understanding that complements her own expertise. Her growth is also evident in her role at Sun Beer, where she moves from a struggling apprentice to a valued consultant, applying her knowledge in a practical business environment. Her notable abilities include a formidable memory for wine facts, regions, and tasting terminology, as well as a competent palate for tasting. However, her most significant ability is her capacity to serve as the intellectual anchor for Shizuku, grounding his wild, imaginative interpretations in reality and helping to solve the complex riddles left by his father.
