Description
Karma Akabane is a student in Class 3-E at Kunugigaoka Junior High School. He is known for his striking red hair and sharp, confident demeanor. His birthday is December 25, and he stands 175 cm tall with a weight of 60 kg. He is assigned the classroom seat number one.

Before the events at the mountain school, Karma was an honors student in the main building with the potential to be in the top-tier Class A. However, he was suspended and subsequently demoted to the end-of-class Class E. The reason for this was an incident where he violently intervened to help a senior student who was being bullied by others. Following this, his homeroom teacher, who had previously favored Karma due to his excellent grades, distanced himself to protect his own reputation. This betrayal caused Karma to develop a deep-seated distrust and disdain for teachers in general, leading him to hold almost zero respect for adults who hold that title.

Karma possesses a complex and often contradictory personality. On the surface, he appears relaxed, nonchalant, and even lazy, frequently skipping tasks he finds boring. Beneath this lies a strong sense of mischief, a cruel streak, and a talent for provocation and manipulation. He takes pleasure in mischief and is known for his brutal and sadistic tendencies when fighting, having no qualms about harming those who threaten him or his classmates. Despite this violent edge, he is guided by a personal sense of justice, which was the true motive behind his original suspension. Karasuma, the class's physical education instructor, observes that while Karma initially seems lazy, there is a strong sense of mischief and a feral vigilance in his eyes, which his casual attitude is meant to hide.

Karma's primary motivation throughout the story is intertwined with his view on teachers. He wishes not just to physically kill his new teacher, Koro-sensei, but to utterly destroy him as a teacher. He seeks to prove that Koro-sensei will eventually betray the class, just as his previous teacher did. This dynamic changes during a pivotal moment when Karma attempts to shoot Koro-sensei while throwing himself off a cliff. Koro-sensei saves him, demonstrating an unwavering sense of responsibility as a teacher. This event transforms Karma's hatred into what Koro-sensei describes as a "healthy and refreshing murderous intent," marking a turning point in their relationship.

Within the story of Class 3-E, Karma serves as a powerful strategist and a top-tier combatant. He is the first student to successfully injure Koro-sensei and is frequently called upon to lead the class in complex plans. His role is that of a talented but chaotic genius who learns to temper his individualism with teamwork. His deep-seated caution towards others initially includes his longtime friend, Nagisa Shiota. Karma had recognized Nagisa's hidden talent for assassination early on, which made him wary and caused a temporary estrangement between them. This tension culminates in a survival game where the two face off; Karma ultimately acknowledges Nagisa's strength, leading to a reconciliation where they begin calling each other by their first names.

Karma's key relationships are central to his development. His bond with Nagisa Shiota is the most significant, evolving from childhood friendship to rivalry, and finally to a mutual, trusting partnership. He also shares a unique connection with Okuda Manami, showing interest in her because she can create poisons to assist in his pranks. Koro-sensei is the most influential adult in his life, acting as the teacher who finally breaks through Karma's cynicism and earns his respect. Karma also has a competitive academic rivalry with Gakushu Asano, the principal's son and leader of the main building's top class.

Karma undergoes notable personal development. Initially overconfident in his natural intelligence, he experiences a setback during the first-semester final exams. His complacency and lack of effort cause his rank to drop significantly, teaching him the position of a "loser" and the value of hard work. After this, he studies diligently and goes on to achieve a perfect score of 500, ranking first in the entire grade during the second-semester final exams. This experience humbles him and leads to mental growth, making him more cautious and respectful of opponents in combat.

Karma's abilities are exceptional and place him at the top of his class. He is a genius with outstanding academic ability, particularly in mathematics, capable of achieving top grades with minimal study. In combat, he excels in the basics of weapons and ambushes, including knives, firearms, and strategy. He has a remarkable ability to learn and incorporate techniques, such as copying Karasuma's defensive moves after watching him. His combat philosophy often involves trickery, manipulation, and psychological warfare to humiliate his opponents. His future career path is to become a bureaucrat in the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, as he sees it as the true way to move national politics from behind the scenes. Seven years after graduation, he passes the national civil service exam and reaches a height of 185 cm.
