Description
Yuta Okkotsu is a central character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series, first introduced as the protagonist of the prequel volume and later becoming a major figure in the main storyline. He is recognized as one of the four special grade sorcerers, a classification that places him among the most powerful individuals in the jujutsu world.

Yuta's background is defined by tragedy and an immense, uncontrollable power. As a child, he formed a deep bond with his friend Rika Orimoto, and the two promised to marry when they grew older. Shortly after she gave him a ring, Rika was killed in a traffic accident before his eyes. Unable to accept her death, Yuta unconsciously cursed Rika, binding her soul to him as a powerful, special grade vengeful spirit. For years, this curse caused Rika to violently attack anyone who threatened Yuta, leading to his isolation from family and peers as he lived in constant fear of harming others.

By the time he is introduced, Yuta has been classified by the jujutsu authorities as a special grade cursed human, and they have ordered his secret execution. However, the powerful sorcerer Satoru Gojo intervenes, suspending the sentence and enrolling Yuta in Tokyo Jujutsu High to train him and help him gain control over Rika's power.

In terms of personality, Yuta initially presents as extremely timid, shy, and filled with self-loathing. His years of isolation have left him with virtually no confidence, a frail demeanor, and a posture that reflects his internal stress. He is deeply empathetic and genuinely cares about the well-being of others, which paradoxically leads him to believe he should isolate himself to keep them safe from Rika. Maki Zenin, one of his classmates, initially criticizes him for being a moody victim without any goals in life. Despite his gentle and soft-spoken nature, Yuta possesses a darker, ruthless side that emerges when those he cares about are harmed. Against the villain Suguru Geto, who injured his friends, Yuta displayed a willingness to kill and was able to fully command Rika's power through his rage.

Yuta's primary motivation throughout his early journey is to break Rika's curse and free her spirit, while also seeking the confidence to believe that he deserves to live among others. Over time, his motivations evolve to include protecting his friends and carrying on the will of his mentor, Gojo. He is later entrusted by Gojo with the responsibility of protecting the other students and is seen as a potential successor to Gojo's legacy.

Yuta's role in the story is significant and multifaceted. After training overseas, he returns to Japan following the chaotic Shibuya Incident. The jujutsu higher-ups task him with executing Yuji Itadori, the vessel of the deadly curse Sukuna, as punishment for the destruction caused. He confronts Yuji and seemingly kills him, but this is later revealed to be a carefully constructed act. Yuta used a reverse cursed technique to secretly heal Yuji, having taken on the grim task to protect him from being executed by someone else. This act demonstrates his willingness to deceive authority and bear a heavy burden for the sake of others, as he sympathized with Yuji's situation of being condemned for a power he could not control. Following this, Yuta becomes a key player in the Culling Game arc, entering a colony to confront powerful ancient sorcerers, rescue allies, and ultimately help prepare for the final confrontation against the primary antagonists.

Key relationships are central to Yuta's development. His bond with Satoru Gojo is that of a mentor and protector who sees immense potential in him, even stating that Yuta has the ability to surpass him. His fellow second-year students at Jujutsu High form his core friend group. Maki Zenin, a skilled fighter with no innate cursed energy, initially pushes him to confront his passivity, and the two develop a deep mutual respect. Toge Inumaki, who uses cursed speech that can harm others, and Panda, a cursed corpse, also become close friends as Yuta learns to understand and accept their unique circumstances. His most profound relationship, however, remains with Rika Orimoto, whose curse both torments him and grants him his immense power. The turning point of his early character arc comes when he accepts their bond and declares his love for her, transforming their parasitic relationship into a collaborative partnership.

Yuta's character development is one of the most pronounced in the series. He evolves from a shy, withdrawn victim who agrees to his own execution into a confident, resolute, and powerful hero. This growth is reflected not only in his personality, which becomes more sociable and even humorous over time, but also in his physical appearance, as he develops a stronger build and a more assured posture following his training in Africa.

Yuta Okkotsu possesses a remarkable array of abilities that justify his special grade status. He wields an immense, nearly boundless reserve of cursed energy, with some assessments suggesting his raw output may surpass even Gojo's. He has trained to become a master swordsman, effectively infusing his katana with cursed energy. His most notable innate technique is Copy, which allows him to replicate the cursed techniques of others. Rika serves as an external storage for these copied techniques, and by fully manifesting her, Yuta can access and use them. He has demonstrated the ability to use powerful techniques like Cursed Speech, which originally belongs to Toge Inumaki, and Sky Manipulation. Yuta is also proficient in the highly advanced reverse cursed technique, which allows him to heal himself and others, and he can manifest his own domain expansion, a pinnacle jujutsu ability. His combination of overwhelming power, strategic intelligence, and emotional control makes him one of the most formidable sorcerers in the modern era.
