Description
Choso is a character from the anime and manga series Jujutsu Kaisen, specifically appearing as a significant figure during the Shibuya Incident arc. He is identified as the oldest of the Cursed Womb: Death Paintings, which are a unique set of beings created from the union of a human woman and a cursed spirit. As a Death Painting Womb, Choso possesses a physical, flesh-and-blood body that is fully visible to non-sorcerers, distinguishing him from purely spiritual cursed spirits.

In terms of appearance, Choso has a pale complexion and long, stringy black hair that is typically tied into two high ponytails. His eyes are a small, dark purple, and he has a distinctive blood mark that extends from both sides of his face across the bridge of his nose. This mark can bleed at will, serving as a direct source of ammunition for his cursed technique. He is usually seen wearing a loose, light tan robe under a purple, gi-like vest, accompanied by a matching round scarf and brown boots.

Choso’s personality is defined by a calm, reserved, and often aloof demeanor. He rarely speaks unless the topic concerns his family and tends to fade into the background of social groups, usually appearing with a bored or disassociated expression. Despite his half-cursed nature, he does not harbor an inherent desire to attack humans or a deep disdain for jujutsu sorcerers. He is not portrayed as cruel or vicious. His primary emotional drive is his fierce attachment and protectiveness towards his younger brothers, having been incarnated with the belief that the three of them lived only for one another and were one entity. He loved his human mother deeply, and his only genuine hatred is reserved for the sorcerer who experimented on his family.

Choso’s motivations shift dramatically over the course of the story. Initially, he aligns himself with the cursed spirits, including Mahito and Pseudo-Geto, primarily to avenge the deaths of his younger brothers, Eso and Kechizu, who were killed by Yuji Itadori and Nobara Kugisaki. He participates in the Shibuya Incident with the goal of killing Yuji. However, during his battle with Yuji, Choso experiences a powerful and inexplicable vision of a shared past where Yuji is also his younger brother. Due to his unique constitution and a blood-based connection he shares with his relatives, he senses Yuji’s impending death and comes to the conclusion that they are related through their shared connection to the ancient sorcerer Noritoshi Kamo, who is later revealed to be Kenjaku. From this point forward, his motivation completely changes; he abandons his revenge and devotes his full strength to protecting Yuji as his older brother, shifting his vengeance towards Kenjaku for manipulating him.

Choso’s role in the story evolves from an antagonist to a crucial ally. After acknowledging Yuji as his brother, he becomes a dedicated protector and companion, fighting alongside him against formidable enemies. He plays a key role in confrontations with powerful sorcerers like Naoya Zenin and later assists Yuki Tsukumo in a battle against Kenjaku, aiming to commit patricide to avenge his family. He serves as a guardian and a source of support for Yuji during the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident.

His key relationships are almost entirely familial. His bond with his fellow Death Paintings, Eso and Kechizu, is the core of his initial identity, and their loss drives his early actions. His relationship with Yuji Itadori is the most transformative; after initially trying to kill him, Choso recognizes Yuji as a sibling and becomes his fiercely loyal older brother. He also has a deep-seated hatred for Kenjaku, the entity responsible for his creation and the suffering of his family, viewing him as a father figure to be destroyed. Choso also shares a significant dynamic with the special grade sorcerer Yuki Tsukumo, who helps him come to terms with his guilt and regret over his past choices and the deaths of his brothers.

Choso undergoes significant development, primarily moving from a being driven by grief and revenge to one driven by love and protection. He struggles with immense regret, feeling he chose the easy path by deciding to live as a curse with his brothers rather than seeking a life among humans. He blames himself for their deaths and fears his foolish choices will leave Yuji alone. Through his interactions with Yuki, he learns to accept that he can live as a human and fight alongside his new brother, honoring the legacy of those he lost.

As for notable abilities, Choso is an exceptionally powerful being, ranked as a Special Grade cursed object upon his incarnation and possessing combat skills comparable to a Grade 1 sorcerer. He has had over a century to hone his powers while in a dormant state. His primary ability is Blood Manipulation, an inherited technique of the Kamo family, which he has mastered to a level far beyond most modern users. This technique allows him to freely control his own blood. A unique biological trait of the Death Paintings allows Choso to convert his cursed energy directly into blood, effectively giving him a near-limitless supply and negating the typical risk of blood loss associated with the technique. His blood also possesses poisonous properties that can be lethal to even powerful opponents. Choso demonstrates a high level of tactical intelligence, using his abilities in creative ways. His techniques include Piercing Blood, where he condenses blood and fires it at supersonic speeds; Supernova, where he creates several small blood orbs that scatter like a shotgun blast; and Flowing Red Scale, which he uses to manipulate his own blood flow and composition to greatly enhance his physical speed, strength, and reflexes. He is also highly proficient in hand-to-hand combat, able to hold his own against martial arts masters like Yuji Itadori and speed-based fighters like Naoya Zenin.
