ONA
Description
Iemon is the primary antagonist in the 2023 anime series Onimusha. A samurai who betrays his feudal lord, his actions drive the central conflict of the story. His early life was defined by his time as a disciple of the elderly samurai Kensuke Matsuki. Recognizing the young man's exceptional skill and ambition, Matsuki officially acknowledged his abilities and bestowed upon him the name Iemon during a coming-of-age ceremony.
Despite his talent and the honor of being recognized as a samurai, Iemon harbored a deep-seated contempt for the samurai class as a whole. In a conversation with his master, he revealed a dark philosophy: he believed that the samurai of the era had become soft, weak, and merely obedient servants of the shogunate, having lost their fearsome warrior spirit. Consequently, his ultimate ambition was nothing less than the extermination of all existing samurai, with the goal of forging a new, stronger order of warriors from the ashes of the old.
Iemon's primary motivation throughout the series is the pursuit of this grand, ruthless dream. He plans to incite a catastrophic conflict on the scale of the Battle of Sekigahara to forcibly enact his vision. To finance and power his scheme, he betrays his lord to seize control of a village that sits atop a valuable gold mine. He is the one who summons the demonic Genma, using their power to turn villagers into monsters and resurrect deceased legendary fighters, building an unstoppable army to achieve his goal.
His key relationships are defined by his singular ambition. His former master, Kensuke Matsuki, while initially appearing to support his disciple, ultimately did not fully endorse Iemon's extreme plan. The legendary swordsman Musashi Miyamoto is hired specifically to stop Iemon, positioning them as direct enemies. Iemon's most significant, and ultimately fatal, relationship is with the resurrected samurai Kojiro Sasaki, Musashi's famous rival. Iemon resurrects and controls Kojiro as a Genma, believing him to be the perfect weapon to defeat Musashi. However, Iemon severely miscalculates Kojiro's nature, as Kojiro’s primary desire is an honorable duel with his old rival, not subservience in a scheme for world domination.
Iemon's development arc culminates in a dramatic downfall rather than a redemption. When he orders Kojiro to cut off Musashi's arms, Kojiro instead betrays him, severing Iemon’s own arms and legs and leaving him limbless on the ground. This moment strips him of all his power and authority. In a final, desperate attempt to survive, he is found by Sahei, a fellow traitor. Iemon begs Sahei to carry him to a laboratory and perform the ritual to transform him into a Genma, promising him authority in his future kingdom. Instead of helping, Sahei reveals his own self-serving motives, lays Iemon on a table, and kills him by strangulation and poison.
Iemon's notable abilities are less about direct combat prowess and more about his strategic cunning and the dark influence he wields. While he was undoubtedly a highly skilled swordsman as a disciple of Matsuki, his primary power lies in his ability to control and command the Genma. He is shown to be capable of resurrecting the dead, creating an army of monsters, and transforming humans into demonic creatures to serve his will. He acts as the architect of the Genma invasion, using their power as instruments to achieve his political and philosophical goals rather than relying solely on his own physical strength.
