Description
Cancer Deathmask is the Gold Saint entrusted with protecting the Cancer Temple within the Sanctuary. In the narrative of Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac - Battle for Sanctuary, he stands as an antagonist, loyal to the false Pope who has seized control of Athena’s stronghold. His origins trace to Italy, where he was trained to become one of the twelve Gold Saints, the elite warriors of the goddess Athena.

Deathmask possesses a deeply cruel and sadistic personality, a trait that is immediately apparent to anyone who enters his temple. He adorns the walls of his domain with the death masks of his victims, which are not only enemy warriors but also innocent men, women, and children. He keeps these masks as trophies, taking perverse pleasure in the tormented expressions of the souls trapped within his chamber. Unlike some Saints who follow the Pope out of deception, Deathmask is aware that the current Pope is an imposter, yet he continues to serve him without hesitation. His core philosophy is a cynical form of pragmatism: he believes that justice is not an absolute concept but is simply a name given to the will of the powerful. For him, the victor defines justice, and therefore, any action taken by the strong is inherently justified. This belief allows him to commit heinous acts without remorse, as he views civilian casualties as unavoidable collateral damage in the exercise of power.

In the story, Deathmask serves as a formidable obstacle for the Bronze Saints as they attempt to reach Athena. His primary role is to eliminate the intruders, and he is specifically confronted by Dragon Shiryu. Initially, he holds a massive advantage, using his unique abilities to effortlessly overwhelm the Bronze Saint. His motivation for fighting is not loyalty to a cause but rather the opportunity to add strong opponents to his collection of masks and to assert his own strength. He maintains key relationships with his fellow Gold Saints, particularly Pisces Aphrodite. The two share a similar outlook, both knowing the Pope's true nature and aligning themselves with his regime because they respect his power. Deathmask also has a connection to Aries Mu and the retired Libra Dohko, though this relationship is purely adversarial, as he is sent to eliminate Dohko before his final confrontation in the Cancer Temple.

The character undergoes a significant and dramatic development during his battle with Shiryu. Throughout the fight, Deathmask remains arrogant, confident that the Cancer Gold Cloth makes him invincible. He goes so far as to attempt to murder Shiryu's friend, Shunrei, from a distance using his telekinesis. However, this act of extreme evil, combined with his complete disregard for the sanctity of life, causes the Gold Cloth to judge him as unworthy. Piece by piece, the Cancer Cloth abandons him, leaving him defenseless. This event forces Deathmask to confront the fact that his own cruelty has stripped him of the divine protection that defined his status. Ultimately, he is defeated by Shiryu, who awakens the Seventh Sense and sends Deathmask falling into the very entrance to the underworld that he used to torment others. In later story arcs, Deathmask is temporarily revived by Hades. While he initially appears as a traitor, it is ultimately revealed that his resurrection was part of a complex ruse to serve Athena, and he is later redeemed, standing with the other Gold Saints to sacrifice themselves in order to destroy the Wailing Wall.

As a Gold Saint, Deathmask has mastered his cosmos to the point of reaching the Seventh Sense, granting him the ability to move and attack at the speed of light. His most notable ability is the Praesepe Underworld Waves, a technique that projects a spiral cosmic wave to forcibly separate an opponent's soul from their body and banish it to the Yomotsu Hirasaka, a dimensional entrance to the world of the dead. While the victim's soul is trapped in this desolate limbo, their physical form becomes an immobile shell. Deathmask can freely travel to and from this dimension himself, giving him complete mastery over the field of battle. He also possesses powerful psychic and telekinetic abilities, which he uses to attack enemies from a distance or to levitate himself. Despite these formidable powers, his arrogance and the potential for his own armor to reject his wickedness remain his greatest vulnerabilities.
