Description
Dan Moroboshi is an extraterrestrial being from the Nebula M78 Land of Light, known in his true form as the Ultra Warrior Ultraseven. He was originally dispatched to map the Milky Way but became captivated by Earth. After saving a young climber named Jiro Satsuma, he chose to assume the man’s appearance and identity, adopting the human alias Dan Moroboshi to avoid confusion. He joined the defense team known as the Ultra Guard, officially becoming its sixth member while secretly acting as an unofficial seventh member in his Ultra form.
In his earliest appearances, Dan is characterized by a friendly, cheerful, and respectful demeanor. He forms deep friendships with his human colleagues, is passionate about preserving peace, and willingly risks his life to save others and expose alien threats. He possesses a strong attention to detail and sensitivity to suspicious behavior, though a certain naivete and belief in the honor of fellow aliens occasionally leads him into traps. Over time, as he faces moral challenges where humans are partly responsible for conflicts or where aliens come to Earth for survival rather than conquest, his experiences cause him to grow less trusting of outsiders and less tolerant of wrongful human actions. This evolution in his personality becomes more pronounced in later series; in Ultraman Taro, he acts more stern and old, while in Ultraman Mebius, he is portrayed as kinder and wiser.
His primary motivation is his profound love and admiration for Earth and its people, which overrides his original mission and dictates all his actions. Even when his own powers begin to fade due to accumulated injuries, he disobeys orders from his superior to return home and heal, choosing instead to continue fighting. This devotion leads him to become a mentor to younger Ultras, such as in Ultraman Leo, where he serves as the strict and sometimes brutally demanding captain of MAC, training Gen Otori to be Earth’s new protector after sustaining a permanent leg injury that forces him to use crutches.
Dan’s role in the overarching story is that of a seasoned, recurring hero and mentor figure. He is a key member of the Ultra Brothers, often appearing to support or guide other Ultras like Ultraman Jack, Ultraman Taro, and Ultraman Mebius. He provides Jack with the powerful Ultra Bracelet and assists in freeing him from captivity. In the Heisei Ultraseven series, which takes place in an alternate continuity, he continues to protect Earth alongside a new generation of the Ultra Guard, at times assuming the form of a young recruit named Masaki Kazamori to work from within the team. In this continuity, he faces disillusionment upon discovering humanity’s own violent history but reaffirms his faith in them.
Key relationships define much of his journey. His bond with his Ultra Guard teammate Anne Yuri develops into a deep, romantic connection, and she is the first human to whom he reveals his true alien nature. Shigeru Furuhashi, another original Ultra Guard member, remains a trusted friend and ally across multiple decades and continuities. His relationship with Gen Otori in Ultraman Leo is central, as he transforms from a warrior into a wise but harsh mentor, pushing Leo to his limits to make him stronger. He also shares a respectful camaraderie with his fellow Ultra Brothers, including Shin Hayata (Ultraman).
Dan’s character undergoes significant development across his long history. He begins as a kind but somewhat naive young hero, matures into a more skeptical and morally complex defender, and eventually settles into the role of a stern yet caring elder statesman and mentor. His physical decline, marked by accumulating injuries and the eventual crippling of his leg, forces him to evolve from a frontline fighter to a strategist and trainer who fights through willpower and experience. A separate, alternate version of Dan Moroboshi appears in the ULTRAMAN manga and anime, where he is a cynical, ruthless, and cold-blooded agent of the SSSP, shaped by the childhood trauma of his parents’ assassination and his twin brother’s kidnapping. This version initially rejects mercy and clashes with the idealistic protagonist Shinjiro Hayata, though his rigid worldview gradually softens.
As the human form of Ultraseven, Dan possesses the ability to transform into his Ultra form using a device called the Ultra Eye. In his Ultra form, his notable abilities include the use of a cutting weapon called the Eye Slugger and the Emerium Beam, an offensive ray fired from his forehead. Unlike many other Ultras, his energy reserve is indicated by a Beam Lamp on his forehead rather than a Color Timer on his chest. He also commands a set of Capsule Monsters—giant creatures like Windam and Miclas—whom he can summon to fight alongside him. Even in his human form, he is depicted as a highly capable and perceptive individual, skilled in investigation and unarmed combat.
