ONA
Description
Dire Crowley serves as the headmaster of Night Raven College, the prestigious magical academy where the events of the story take place. He is a tall man of unknown age, noted for looking much younger than his many years likely are, with short, wavy black hair and slightly pointed ears. His most distinctive feature is the black, raven-like mask he wears at all times, which conceals much of his face and leaves only his glowing yellow eyes visible. His attire is consistently elaborate, consisting of a black top hat adorned with a gem and feather, a white dress shirt, a black tie, a sparkling black vest, and a large black-and-blue cape with feather-like details on the shoulders. He completes this ensemble with black gloves tipped with golden claw rings and carries a staff shaped like a large key with a golden raven handle.

Crowley is an incredibly eccentric and flamboyant individual who frequently declares his own kindness to those around him. Despite holding the highest administrative position at the college, he is often carefree to a fault and displays a marked reluctance to take direct responsibility for solving problems. When crises arise, his typical response is to delegate the task of resolving them to his students, framing this as an opportunity to cultivate their independence, though it often comes across as an avoidance of his own duties. He has a dramatic flair and is prone to comical overreactions, which, combined with his habit of appearing and disappearing without warning, makes him a source of frustration for both the faculty and the student body. While he frequently prioritizes the school's public image and is not above using manipulative tactics or veiled threats to achieve his goals, he does show genuine moments of generosity and expresses sincere pleasure when witnessing his students work together successfully as a team.

In the narrative, Crowley plays a pivotal role as the authority figure who takes in the protagonist after they are mysteriously transported to Twisted Wonderland without any magical abilities. He grants them permission to live in the abandoned Ramshackle Dorm on campus and, after a trial period, officially enrolls them and the monster Grim as a single, unique student, appointing the protagonist as the dorm's prefect. Throughout the story, he tasks this new student with a variety of odd jobs and missions, often framing them as repayment for his generosity, while also claiming to be diligently searching for a way to send them back to their original world, a claim that is sometimes met with skepticism. During the climax of the Heartslabyul episode, Crowley demonstrates his capability by using a powerful barrier spell to protect Ace, Deuce, and the others from the destructive attacks of the overblotted Riddle Rosehearts. He then takes charge of the evacuation and returns after the battle to help escort the exhausted Riddle to the infirmary, fulfilling his role as headmaster.

Crowley's key relationships are defined by his position of authority. With the protagonist and Grim, he maintains a transactional dynamic, providing shelter and enrollment in exchange for their labor and compliance, though he also expresses high expectations for their potential. He interacts frequently with Ace Trappola and Deuce Spade, often involving them in the tasks he assigns to the protagonist and even encouraging Ace to challenge Riddle for the position of housewarden. The other faculty members, such as Divus Crewel and Mozus Trein, are often blunt with him and call out his irresponsibility, showing that he is not particularly well-liked among his peers. His development throughout the story is subtle, but there are hints that his irresponsible and eccentric demeanor may, at times, be an act that conceals a deeper knowledge of the events unfolding around him, including the phenomenon of overblot.

Regarding his abilities, Dire Crowley is implied to be a mage of considerable power, though he rarely displays the full extent of his capabilities. One of his most notable demonstrated spells is the creation of a magical barrier strong enough to shield multiple students from the violent attacks of an overblot mage. He has also shown the ability to conjure flames and to create a virtual double of himself for student practice sessions, which he claims is one of his weaker spells. Visual cues, such as scenes in the anime’s opening sequence, strongly hint that he possesses the ability to transform into a bird, likely a crow or raven.
