Description
Ainz Ooal Gown is an undead skeletal figure clad in elaborate black and gold robes, with red pinpoints of light glowing in his empty eye sockets. Originally an ordinary salaryman named Satoru Suzuki who found belonging in the online game YGGDRASIL, he was the guild master of the renowned guild Ainz Ooal Gown based in the Great Tomb of Nazarick. When the game’s servers were scheduled to shut down, he stayed logged in and found himself transported to a new, real world where the non-player characters gained sentience. He renamed himself after his guild to honor his former companions and to attract any other transported players.
Despite his fearsome appearance and immense power as an Overlord magic caster, his personality is defined by an internal conflict. His undead nature suppresses many human emotions and physical needs, though he occasionally expresses nostalgic longing and, under certain circumstances, can temporarily regain a fuller range of feelings. He retains vestiges of his human consciousness, leading to cautious overthinking, anxiety, and a tendency to imagine threats far beyond what actually exists. In front of his loyal NPC followers, he feels forced to maintain a facade of wisdom and infallibility, even as he internally struggles with self-doubt and the stress of their high expectations. While his actions can be ruthlessly pragmatic and his karma is considered extremely evil, he is not inherently sadistic; he displays genuine kindness toward those he considers innocent and treats the NPCs of Nazarick as his precious children.
His primary motivation is the preservation and prosperity of Nazarick, which he views as the last legacy of his only friends. He also searches for any former guild mates who might be in the new world, hoping that building a legendary reputation will help them find him. Over time, he accepts his role as the Sorcerer King, establishing a nation in his own name and seeking to create a utopia where all races can live in peace, though his methods often involve brutal military conquest and sophisticated political maneuvering. In one crossover setting, he holds the position of Vice Representative of Class 2 and seeks genuine friendship and camaraderie, particularly with others who share a background as former Japanese salarymen. He is analytical and observant, often deducing hidden truths about the worlds he encounters.
Key relationships define his experience. He sees the NPCs of Nazarick—including Albedo, Demiurge, Shalltear, Aura, Mare, and the Pleiades battle maids—as his children, and they revere him as the highest of the Supreme Beings. He finds their intense devotion both stressful and endearing. He shares a unique bond with Tanya von Degurechaff, as she is the only one who directly reveals her identity as a former salaryman. He is wary of the goddess Aqua due to her holy purification magic, which poses a genuine threat to him. He also interacts with other main characters, noting peculiarities such as the dark energy surrounding Subaru Natsuki. His adventurer persona, Momon the Dark Hero, allows him to operate within human society while his true skeletal form remains feared.
Ainz is a level one hundred magic caster with mastery over an enormous repertoire of spells, including low-tier magic, tenth-tier magic, and super-tier magic that does not consume mana but has long cooldowns. Notable super-tier spells include Fallen Down, The Goal of All Life Is Death (which strengthens instant-death magic to bypass immunities), and Iä Shub-Niggurath. He can cast Greater Teleportation, summon armies of the undead, and use Time Stop to halt the flow of time for everyone else. His racial skills as an Overlord grant immunities to cold, electrical, and low-tier magic, as well as a Despair Aura that can cause fear, panic, or even instant death. He possesses eleven World-Class Items, artifacts of reality-altering power, including the red orb embedded in his chest that destroys weapons on contact. To compensate for his weakness in physical combat, he can use Perfect Warrior to temporarily gain fighter abilities. Despite his overwhelming power, he is vulnerable to holy purification magic, and his competitive pride can sometimes lead to questionable decisions. His strategic mind, vast knowledge from years of gaming, and extreme caution make him an exceptionally dangerous opponent.
