Description
Lionet Ban is a Bronze Saint who serves the goddess Athena, bearing the cloth of the constellation Leo Minor, also known as Lionet. He is one of the many children sent by Mitsumasa Kido to train as Saints across the world. Ban completed his training on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, where he earned his Bronze Cloth. He is originally from Japan. In the story, Ban participates in the Galaxian Wars tournament organized by Saori Kido, where he faces Jabu of Unicorn in the first round; he initially holds an advantage but is ultimately defeated. Following this loss and the end of the competition, Ban returns to Kilimanjaro to continue his training and improve his abilities. During the Sanctuary arc, which is the setting of Battle for Sanctuary Part 2, Ban returns to the Sanctuary alongside other secondary Bronze Saints. He chooses not to fight the Gold Saints directly but instead stays to protect Athena, engaging and defeating several soldiers of the Sanctuary in the process.
Ban is characterized by a fiery and passionate personality, described as an ardent knight with the enthusiasm of a lion. He possesses a strong sense of justice and is deeply loyal to his cause and his comrades. He is assertive and confident, with a courageous heart that drives him to put himself in harm's way for the sake of others, whether they be fellow Saints or innocent people. His motivations center on his duty as a Saint to protect Athena and uphold the ideals of chivalry and heroism. He is decisive and action-oriented, preferring to face challenges head-on rather than hesitate.
In the larger narrative, Ban is a minor but recurring Bronze Saint. While he does not have a central role in the main battles against the Gold Saints during the Sanctuary arc, he contributes by defending Athena and fighting Sanctuary forces. After the Sanctuary is restored, he becomes a perimeter guard under the command of Shaina. He appears again during the Hades arc, where he uses his cosmo and his body to protect Seika, Seiya's sister, alongside other Bronze Saints.
Key relationships include his fellow secondary Bronze Saints such as Jabu, Geki, Ichi, and Nachi, with whom he often fights alongside and protects Athena. He shares a bond of camaraderie with these Saints, and they operate as a group in supporting roles. His loyalty is ultimately to Athena and Seiya's group of main Bronze Saints.
In terms of development, Ban begins as a participant in the Galaxian Wars seeking to prove himself, suffers an early defeat, and uses that loss as motivation to train further. Over time, he matures into a dependable guardian of the Sanctuary, taking on protective duties and risking his life for others without seeking personal glory. While his screen time is limited, his arc shows growth from a competitive fighter to a steadfast soldier of Athena.
Ban possesses superhuman strength, speed, and durability, which are typical of Saints who have awakened their cosmo. His primary offensive technique is the Lionet Bomber, an explosive attack that channels his cosmo into a powerful strike. He also uses a technique called Dead Howling. In combat, he can launch himself at opponents with the ferocity of a lion, employing strong knee strikes, quick sequences of punches, and grappling moves to overwhelm his enemies. He emanates his cosmo to augment his physical attacks, hurling opponents away and causing significant damage on impact.
