ONA
Description
Cygnus Hyoga is one of the five main Bronze Saints and serves as the protector of the Cygnus constellation. Born in Siberia to a Japanese father, Mitsumasa Kido, and a Russian mother named Natassia, he has blond hair and blue eyes inherited from her. The loss of his mother in a shipwreck when he was six years old is the defining tragedy of his life, as she gave up her place on a lifeboat to save him. This event deeply scarred him and became his initial motivation for becoming a Saint, as he sought the power to reach her submerged grave beneath the ice.
Hyoga presents a calm, collected, and often unemotional demeanor, which is a direct reflection of his training as an ice Saint. His master, Aquarius Camus, taught him that emotional detachment was necessary for a Saint's survival. However, beneath this cold exterior lies a deeply passionate and devoted individual who struggles to suppress his true feelings. This internal conflict between his natural compassion and his learned stoicism is a core aspect of his personality. He initially appears distant and rational, even serving as an assassin sent by the Sanctuary to eliminate his fellow Bronze Saints during the Galaxian Wars, fueled by resentment toward the Graad Foundation and his father. His interactions with Pegasus Seiya, Dragon Shiryu, and Andromeda Shun gradually reveal his latent loyalty and compassion, leading him to abandon his mission and fully commit to Athena, especially after Camus sank his mother's ship deeper into the ocean to sever his attachment.
Throughout the story, Hyoga is driven by a need to live up to the sacrifices of those he has lost, including his mother and his master. This sense of guilt and responsibility is compounded by an accident during his training in Siberia, where his friend Isaak sacrificed an eye to save him from drowning. The memory of his mother, symbolized by the cross necklace he always wears, remains his greatest source of strength and vulnerability. His primary motivation evolves from a personal quest to honor his past to a commitment to protecting Athena and his friends, believing that his emotional bonds, once seen as a weakness, are actually the source of his greatest resilience.
In the Sanctuary arc, Hyoga plays a pivotal role, facing his master Camus twice. Their first confrontation in the Libra Temple ends with Hyoga being sealed in a Freezing Coffin, from which he is freed by his comrades using the Libra weapons. After being revived from near death by Andromeda Shun's selfless act, Hyoga forges an unbreakable bond with him, frequently acknowledging that he owes Shun his life. Their second and final battle in the Aquarius Temple is a climactic duel where Hyoga masters the Absolute Zero technique and performs the Aurora Execution, defeating his master and accepting the mantle of the future Aquarius Gold Saint. His key relationships are defined by this deep sense of duty and gratitude, not only to Shun but also to Phoenix Ikki, whose own tragic past Hyoga comes to understand, creating a unique link between the two warriors.
As a Saint, Hyoga possesses superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to sense other cosmos. His specific power is cryokinesis, allowing him to manipulate ice and cold by halting the motion of atoms with his Cosmo. His signature techniques include Diamond Dust, a beautiful but deadly freezing barrage; the Aurora Thunder Attack; and his most powerful technique, the Aurora Execution, which he inherited from Camus and which allows him to reach the theoretical limit of Absolute Zero, or minus 273.15 degrees Celsius. He can also use techniques like the Kol'itso ice ring to immobilize his opponents. Throughout his battles, his Cloth evolves, eventually becoming a God Cloth after being blessed by Athena's blood, granting him even greater power to fight on the divine realms of the Underworld.
