Description
Gustav serves as the court physician for the royal family of the Coleus Kingdom, specifically tasked with the medical care of the ailing princess, Zenobia Coleus. While appearing as a dedicated doctor, his true identity is that of an Archdaemon, a high-ranking demon general who operates under the command of the daemon lord known as Violet. Nearly one hundred years old, Gustav was summoned and given a physical form through forbidden magic used by the king of Coleus three years before the main events of the story.
Gustav is calculating, manipulative, and deceitful, hiding his malevolent intentions behind the respectable and trustworthy facade of a royal physician. He is part of a long-term scheme to create chaos in the Coleus Kingdom for the benefit of his master, Violet. To this end, he displays a willingness to prolong the suffering of an innocent person, as he secretly uses his medical position for the opposite of its intended purpose.
The primary motivation for Gustav is to manifest his god, the daemon lord Violet, into the physical world. The central part of this plot involves preparing Princess Zenobia to serve as a suitable vessel for Violet's manifestation. To facilitate this, he uses his position to curse Zenobia with a terrible illness that leaves her blind and bedridden, weakening her for this purpose while simultaneously lending his demonic power to her brother, the First Prince Sauzer, to greatly improve his health and strength. By creating this stark contrast and pushing a wedge between Prince Sauzer and their other brother, Aslan, Gustav and his accomplice Karl aim to instigate a destructive civil war over the throne, a conflict they believe will serve their masters goals.
Gustavs central role in the story is that of an antagonist and a hidden manipulator. When Rimuru Tempest is asked to investigate the escalating succession crisis in Coleus, he and his allies quickly begin to suspect that the mysterious illness affecting Zenobia might be unnatural. Their suspicion falls on Gustav, the court physician with the most access to her. As the investigation deepens, Rimuru ultimately confirms that Gustav is the source of the curse afflicting the princess, exposing his secret identity as an Archdaemon.
Gustavs primary relationship is with his fellow Archdaemon, Karl, who acts as his accomplice in the plot against the Coleus royal family. He also has a relationship with his master, Violet, for whom he orchestrates the entire conspiracy. Within the royal family, he deceptively serves Princess Zenobia as her physician while secretly cursing her, and he acts as a benefactor to Prince Sauzer, while in truth making him a pawn in a destructive scheme. His actions put him in direct opposition to Rimuru Tempest, who works to uncover his plot, and the princesss other brother, Prince Aslan, who is deceived by Gustav but eventually learns the truth and fights against him.
Gustav experiences little personal growth or redemption, remaining steadfast in his goal until the end. His development is instead defined by the unraveling of his long-running scheme. Once his plot is exposed by Rimuru and his allies, Gustavs role shifts from a hidden puppeteer to a direct combatant as he attempts to destroy the evidence and fight to clear the way for Violets manifestation. His story concludes when he is engaged by the demon lord Luminous Valentine. After being stopped, he is deemed useless by his master Violet, who then personally eliminates him, ending his threat to the kingdom.
As an Archdaemon, Gustavs most notable ability is his power over curses and illness, which he uses specifically to afflict Princess Zenobia. He can also lend his demonic power to other individuals, as he does with Prince Sauzer to grant him health and strength. Beyond these specific applications, as a high-ranking demon, Gustav possesses general supernatural strength and magical capabilities, which he is prepared to use in direct combat when his identity is finally revealed.
